My husband was incredibly loopy after the first one for the rest of the day. He had a few polyps so he recently went back for his second one that was supposed to be within five years but was more like nine. He had no polyps this time but wasn’t nearly as wiped out by the anesthesia. Not sure if they used something different or if it was because he wasn’t in there as long. The first time, he remembered nothing they told him and was an imbecile the rest of the day. This time, he came home and went back to work.

I have only had one, I think they told me ten years because I had no polyps or anything wrong. I was fine afterwards.

Regardless of whether you are “slick as a whistle” as they told me, or have a few issues like husband, they push you to take some kind of fiber supplement like Metamucil. Not sure why if your diet has been sufficient to avoid problems. I ignored that.

One thing I thought was disturbing is there doesn’t seem to be tons of privacy when they talk to you in the recovery area. Husband told me everything they told the woman on the other side of the curtain from him. They were pretty sure she had cancer but she suspected something with bleeding she was having. Seems like a person like that should get a room alone to recover.
Was that word play? :)

Really looking forward to my first colonoscopy on Monday! Not really. Anyone got advice/stories?

Had lots of them. Get a 2 liter of sprite cold, and swoosh that around your mouth and spit it out after each dose of the thick goop they make you drink. It's super salty and it will get you nauseous before you get the whole bottle done.

Other than that, the worst part is the prep by far, the procedure is nothing.

Well this is odd...I'm heading in for my 2nd one in about 2 hours. (I'm 63)
Actually the prep wasnt quite as bad as I remember the first time. I asked, and they said it ok to add a little lemonade flavor (from a packet) to the prep. It sure took the edge of the bitter/salt ....
Looking forward to a good meal afterwards....

A tip for helping keep the prep drink down. Get some butterscotch candy or something similar. Suck on one while you are drinking the prep. Makes it taste a little more palatable and helps keep your stomach from telling you, "ok no more of that"

Prep is not fun but doc told me it would be the best sleep I ever had,and he was right. Very much worth it and important to get done. Jello, popsicles and broth helped to get through.

I thought the "prep" was maybe going more pill based?
I had one last December and I did the pill method. I think some docs still use the chalky drink, but I avoided that.

It's still a lot of liquid to consume with all the pills, in a fairly short time frame (two sets a few hours apart). If someone is averse to taking capsules, it might be unpleasant.

My most recent one was more memorable than I would have liked. I was enjoying the buzz from the anesthesia in my last few moments of consciousness when they started the procedure a little early. Let me just say that they weren't as gentle as I would have expected.

Prep was the worst. Mine was pill-based. Had to swallow 12 pills (one at a time) then get to a toilet and hold on for dear life (exaggerating). Repeat the procedure about 8 hours later. My appointment was at 8am so I was awake at 2am taking pills and blowing out. I honestly didn't think I would be able to get to the clinic without crapping myself but magically around 7am everything calmed down and the faucet shut off. I was worn out by the time the procedure was ready to begin so I welcomed the anesthesia and the sleep. When I woke, I was hungry but didn't notice anything else - they could have just knocked me out and sent me directly to recovery and I wouldn't have known.

My only tip would be that wiping with dry toilet paper all day and night can make things pretty rough and sore down there - some type of wet wipe might have been better.

Don't worry about it much - just get it done and look forward to normal eating when it's over. Good luck!

I haven't yet had a colonoscopy but I have had some surgery down there. The first time I met my doctor I stood next to him and realized he was 6'5" and had fingers like bratwursts. I hadn't even got done shaking his hand and I said "you're this size and you decided when you got to medical school to be a GI doctor? What's wrong with you?"

I was later smacked in the face with the realization that his fingers were in fact as large as I thought they were.

You may be right. Probably was a flex sig, it was a long time ago. Still an interesting experience. I do remember that.
That was what I had first, and let me tell ya, NEVER AGAIN!!! I was crying. And then they had to do the colonoscopy anyway, so it didn't gain anything for me.

True story - when I was having to get them every 6 months, I had to do something to help me laugh about it. They lay you on your left side. So I had hubby draw a smily face on my right cheek with a sharpie. The doc put in his notes "patient seemed to be in good humor". :D
