Gonzaga to join the Big 12?

I think a big part of the Gonzaga idea people aren't thinking about is their recruiting base. Gonzaga pulls a ton of international recruits.

Yormark wants national exposure. Even if football pays the bills in the USA, basketball is significantly more popular world wide. Taking a team with in an international pipeline, maybe the biggest one in CBB, getting a new timezone, and getting a quality program? Yeah thats a W.

Remember, Yormark doesnt wait for the dust to settle. He makes the dust. He's currently finding holes in the market and attacking them, just like we were told he'd do.

Imagine the money that could come if we get really established fandoms in say, the UK and Australia. Or we find a way to hit our product in Europe. We're never closing the money gap in the USA alone. But by going international with a sport that has more value overseas, and being the first one to do it? Yeah, that would be huge
Gonzaga's main recruiter for international players was Tommy Lloyd, now head coach of Arizona. Who knows how that will affect their ability to recruit internationally going forward, but if you ask Gonzaga fans they are concerned that without him that well is dry.

Just means we need to grab Arizona as well!

With who? ND is in all sports besides FB and the majority of their FB sched must be in the ACC, they are barely independent in FB.

What's the compensation arrangement for ND home games vs ACC teams?

If Gonzaga joins in all other sports it won't be that different of an arrangement. If it's just basketball only I agree it would be really odd.

What B12 wants: valuable Gonzaga basketball
The deal to get it: we'll see

What ACC wants: some guaranteed non conf games against Notre Dame to help their lagging football brand
The deal to get it: a full conference home for all ND non football sports

Notre Dame can't play a conference championship game in football. That alone makes them really similar to Gonzaga if Gonzaga joins in all sports.

Not sure what you are asking, at least in relation to what I was talking about?

Just looking at this year's schedule they have 4 games vs the ACC. Two of them are at home. Does the ACC get money for those two games? Seems like a loose football affiliation if the ACC only makes money off the two games ND plays at an ACC stadium.

Well the ACC pays ND about $10M per year as a partial member. I guess I do not know how much they make from their TV contract for the ND FB games but its safe to say they do make something to be able to pay them that much.

Is it though?

Seems it was just a combination of other conferences having more money to offer and ESPN deciding to tear them apart after the big east rejected their tv deal.
Exactly. It wasn't because they had football only and hoops only schools. It was because the Big East for the most part sucked in football and wasn't as valuable a commodity because of that. This is not the case in the Big XII.

Are their other sports up to being in a P5 Level conference? Seems like a big jump from the WCC in most beyond their BBALL.

Biggest takeaway is that their AD has only been on the job since Sept 1, 2021. The previous AD had been there for 24 years.

Women's Bball made 2nd round NCAA tournament - their 13th appearance

Baseball team was ranked #10 at one point last year. Swept OK ST in a 3-game series

Women's rowing won WCC for the 7th straight time, finished 18th overall at NCAAs

Womens XC finished 4th at NCAA West Regionals (best finish in program history).

Mens XC finished 5th at NCAA West Regionals

Those are the highlights from last year.

I really don’t know but all these western conferences are far flung geographically already. I’ve driven through Western us a lot and it’s just not easily drivable compared to Midwest, Texas, eastern us, etc…

Pepperdine, Loyla Marymount and San Diego are a looooooong way from Spokane. Bay Area is further away than people think too.

Silly factoid: PTI talking about this event, one clip they show is ISU lining up with Tech for the Big 12 Tournament game. We got airtime today!

This is a good point. I found this dated (2016) story on how far FBS teams would travel that year for their schedule of football games. Note that in that year the MW* and the PAC were #1 and #3 for average miles traveled with only independents as a group in between them. Sure things have changed with conference realignment, but the point you were making certainly still has merit.

*of course Hawaii skews the Mountain West but they are still one of the most widespread conferences without Hawaii in the equation.

For fans the road miles are a lot further too, no straight line roads. PNW highway routes are nothing like Midwest.

I think with all these western teams it needs to be viewed through lens they always had terrible travel requirements.

Oh god do not remind me of that game. One of the worst games I've ever been to at the Spring (T-Mobile) Center.

Locked on Big 12 had a pretty good podcast on zags big 12. On the other side of the coin, Wilber and Calzono said it wasn’t really news because zags have been talking to everyone.

Why is it an either/or thing? Adding Gonzaga doesn’t detract from our ability to add other all-sports programs.

Even if Gonzaga only nets us a little money, it’s still a net positive. And I think there’s a lot of non-monetary value they bring in terms of brand/competitiveness/visibility etc.
Right now it isn't. But let's say the Big12 adds 4 Pac teams & 4 ACC teams. All of which bring football and basketball revenue to Big12 coffers.

Is Gonzaga still a good fit at school #17 or #21? In hoops an odd # of teams isn't an issue. It's more about frequency of playing othe conference teams as the conference adds teams.

Let's say Gonzaga becomes a top 30-50 program. Their brand takes a hit. Are they still a good fit?

Would you prefer to add a school with FB&MBB that ESPN/Fox values at $50M a year. Or Gonzaga that ESPN/Fox value at $15M annually?

I'm just not sure Gonzaga is add #1.

Interstate 5 is pretty straight forward. Washington State is out there, Spokane as well.

When Colorado was in the conference, it wasn’t exactly close.
