Biggest worry for this team is still shooting and that is going to be an issue this year but it is nice to see them be able to get the ball in the pain to bigs and get some easy buckets. That should definitely help the offense.

But I think this defense is going to be elite again and maybe better than last year. It will be interesting to see what King can provide when he is eligible.

If you just go by pure KenPom and compare now to last year. Offense went from 179 to 87 and Defense fell from 5 to 30. So yes, Offense is much better so far. Defense is not like it was prior and probably could use improvement there.

I'm still a little worried about how we handle a press.
It's hard to tell much against this level of competition, but just like last year we looked unsure what to do, especially right after the initial inbound. I'm sure that's where not having much point guard experience really hurts.
Hopefully we can get better at it because I think our bigs this year could really punish the defense if we can get the ball up the floor quickly.
I think the lack of an experience PG could really come into play against Big 12 defenses even if it isn't a press.

Defense hasn't given up 50 in a game yet this year. Rankings be damned, they are passing the eye test.

You're looking at adjusted numbers, which still have previous seasons of data factored in until around the new year and consider strength of competition (IUPUI is the worst offense in the country).

If you look at raw data, we are only allowing 0.59 PPP so far. Can't do better than that. Just need to wait for more games to be played to see how those adjusted numbers move around with more games and better competition.

I finally had a chance to watch last night once football games were over and the toddler was in bed.

My takeaways:

- Our team will not have a guy that consistently get you 15 points, but they have half a dozen that can get you 10 on a regular basis.

- I was damn impressed by Tamin Lipsey. He might just make us forget about Tyrese Hunter pretty damn fast

- love the efficient game out of Osunniyi.

- Holmes appears able to fill in for spot minutes at PG, is comfortable with the ball in his hands, and looks smooth out there, granted you have to take competition level into consideration

- Grill and Gabe...woof, boys. Don't think it matters how many shots they get up in between games and seasons, because if these are our best options for shooting, we are in for some long nights this winter

- love to see the improvement in Jones' game. He appears to have really taken (at least) a half step forward.

- the team might be one guard short in the rotation of being really, really good. As it stands, I think they can still be 'good'.

Offensive rebounding might be worth an extra 6-10 points per game.
This is a huge point. They looked like they were really hunting the offensive boards yesterday. The first two games their Offensive Rebound Percentage (% of ISU shots we rebounded) was 46% and 48%. Last year we only had 2 games all season with >45% OBP - Grambling (46%) and Iowa (51%).

The Iowa game last year was the only one all season where it seemed like they were focusing hard on the offensive boards - I think it's a huge factor for this team (and Ward is by far the best Offensive Rebounder on the team)

Yeah, love the way they are hitting the O boards and they have a team this year that can be really good at it. It is nice to have a team that can do that. If they can keep that up plus the steal rate, it will lead to a lot easier buckets.

Going to be a pretty similar story to last year. They're gonna play their tails of but we are going to struggle to put the ball in the hoop. Going to be an easy team to root for with help on the way next year.

Yep.... shooting is still awful. Defense is unbelievable.

We have no shooters at all though. Gabe can get hot at times, but VERY inconsistent. Grill is just a horrible shooter. This could be a very big issue once again this year unfortunately. At some point you have to be able to put the ball in the basket. Defense will keep us in almost every game though. I love watching TJ's teams hustle and play defense... it's amazing.

With how inconsistent these two have looked so far I would love to see a lineup of

Tamin
Holmes
Jaz
Tre
Osun

Once Tre is back

I think we'll do a lot better job of scoring this year, even if not a better shooting team. Offensive rebounds, getting to the FT line and making FT will all help avoid the scoring droughts.
