Hakeem Butler tweeted earlier this year along the lines of how lazy our receivers were. Im sure he has great character, but multiple times this year Shaw gave about the worst effort imaginable on 50/50 balls. I think he has the potential to be pretty damn good, but he has to elevate that area of the game. He’s responsible for a couple of Dekkers INTs.

I figure if he hasn’t by now he isn’t going to

How many recruits do we have this year?

Figure we have McLaughlin, Vaughn, Willich? And Imming. So probably need at least a portal player and maybe a JUCO to put some experience there.
Recruit wise, Sadowsky is listed as a LB on 247. Not sure what positions the staff projects athletes like Patton or Ebel.

Not exactly sure.

Looked at the roster, Mendoz-something and 21 also saw action besides those four so there is 6. Plus I saw 5 others listed at LB, guessing some are walk ons but even 1 more would set us okay.

Problem is, Dekkers does not use the TEs like Purdy did. Not sure if that weighs into Stogner's decision. Maybe without Xavier, Dekkers would be forced to look to TEs now.

Stogner might decide to go to "Tight-End U" schools like Iowa (Kittle, Fant, Hockenson) and Stanford (Schultz, Zach Ertz, Austin Hooper)
I'm sure Dekkers job is to execute the play called by the OC. It's not a matter of "using the TE's" if they're not the first choice in the play called.

This whole transfer portal thing reminds me of the scene in Moneyball where Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) has to convince the scouts that none of the players they are recommending are viable alternatives because they don’t get on base enough. Maybe Matt is looking for guys who get first downs. Or never fumble. Not five star players but guys who are dependable.

Yes and no. The play is usually designed for a receiver due to route and set up, but you have to read the defense and your progressions could be altered if the defense rotated had to one side. It’s not as cut and dried as what the play station does.

Alot of these recievers need to move on if we want our offense to improve. Campbell has had alot of busts at receiver over the years.

He is great at bringing in guys with alot of hype, then you completely forget they are still in the program because they'd dissappear for 6 weeks straight.
WR's haven't been great. He's had a few really good ones, but not a lot of decent-good ones. A lot of busts. Good thing the former guy in charge of WR is an up and comer and now running the offense! (jimlad, kind of, but not really).

I am not sure I ever saw it with Shaw. He always looked big and slow. OK production as, what, a SO? Then barely heard from him the last 2 years. Think he may have been dinged up most of his JR year though.

I wish he would've ended up being something but he just never progressed and this year was a flat out liability on the field. Didn't block well out on the edges and fumbled 3 times this year.

Yeah he regressed pretty horribly. I am not sure how much of that is on Scheelhaase, but Shaw did not improve under his tutelage.

Went back and checked, and it was his RS FR year he had 5 TDs. Thought maybe at that point he was going to amount to something, but numbers dipped a bit the next season, then he all but disappeared from the program for a couple years until becoming noticeable again this year for mostly bad reasons.

Yeah I don't know if blaming Nate is warranted. Would have to get some insight from sources within to determine that because it'd just be speculation on our end. Some guys soak up information and some don't. Some guys want to put in the effort and some don't.

If the fault lies with Shaw, then I think that sends some bigger red flags about the ability of the other WR's on the roster. If Shaw was lazy or just going thru the motions and not really 'buying in' then hopefully there would have been someone else on the depth chart to get his snaps. I guess it's hard to say without having the full scope of everything.
