Does ISU ever post up the outside shooters?

Long ago a coach told me that outside shooters should have a functional post-up game because 1) all shooters go through slumps with their outside shot and they need another avenue to contribute offensively, and 2) the outside shooter might be defended by someone who can't defend well in the post, which would necessitate an adjustment by the defense that could be exploited.

Of course, this is something that the outside shooters have to work on throughout the year so it is ready to use, and it is not guaranteed to work. But is is something to try, as opposed to missing 3pt shot after 3pt shot. GC, JH, CG, and particularly AK all have enough size to at least try it.

I'm trying to picture any of those posting up and Holmes might be the best but even then it takes a good handle and footwork.

I thought we were pretty deep at one point as well, and that was even when Jaz was out. Of course Jaz comes back, and Grill goes down essentially. It's hard to say, but I think with Williams, Kunc, and Grill healthy all year, we would be extremely deep. Our posts have again proven to not be super great, but at least Osun is a half step up from Conditt, plus we have Ward as an emergency body if needed.

Williams is that 5th guard we really could have used and benefited from in this current stretch of season IMO.

I see where you're going. I think it's more accurate to say the available depth hasn't been 6th man of the year caliber. As has been said multiple times in multiple threads, Grill being out has really hurt in many ways, depth being one.

Yes, good assessments, both. I think you summed it up nicely, in what I was struggling to describe.

And again, TJ has done a magnificent job so far, and is only in year 2, after a 1 win season and the cupboard was bare. Help is on the way. The thing is, every team wants 'shooters'. Who couldn't use a couple more?

Bama plays a lot of guys because they play a really fast paced and they have blown some teams out which allows their bench to play more.

I just think teams play ISU better the second time around and the offense sucks because there are no great shooters and no one can take their man off the dribble and get their own shot.

We are a different team on both ends without Caleb Grill, and getting him healthy for March is more important than trying to steal a win tonight.

Yup, talent upgrade is needed, and coming. Not that I'm upset with what we have. Our team is just a little shy on consistency and the higher 'octane', and plays in the best conterence in the country.

We do need a healthy Caleb Grill. He's not always on, but when he is, we can be very hard to beat. Plays good D as well.

Do we have a depth issue? Or is TJ just being stubborn?

The Cyclones are winning when we go 8-9 deep and Ward/Watson get 5-8 mins/g. Kunc comes back, Grill is a shell of himself, TJ locks the rotation to 7 and they start to look tired, unfocused, Gabe reverts into a deep ball chucker, and the Ls start piling up.

And that is exactly what I see is that they look extremely fatigued sometimes before the 1st half of recent games. You didn’t see that much glaring fatigue when we went 3-0 to start the conference. Some bag on Lipsey but he’s maxing minutes as a freshman with games!! Of course he’s not used to this continuing Big 12 grind, and he’s going to make some errors because of fatigue. Holmes recently looks gassed a lot too.

It was suggested today on KXNO there may be locker room issues and that there may be more to Grill sitting that just the injury? Are these just ridiculous rumors or is there any truth to it?

Grill has always thought highly of TJ.

Well said. This team has limitations. Consistent shooting by anybody is one of them.
Yes, we miss Grill. Gives us another piece that might be hot on a night when others are struggling.
Grill - Do not forget his rebounding. Excellent for his position and size.

Having virtually no one that can create off the dribble or really do much off the ball hurts this and the post is limited too.
