It's complicated. But one idea would be to merge the P12N into ESPN's properties as they are with the Longhorn Network. The B12 is now pretty much on ESPN's platform. The network has obvious interest in the P12 as well.

Spreading the network to the plains increases viewership perhaps exponentially. Games like Oregon at ISU or oSu at Washington would be hugely interesting to a national audience as well, to say nothing for Arizona/Ku hoops.

My sense is that the P12 has problems associated mostly with fans out there not caring. Merging that inventory with the Midwest would be a fix of sorts. The alliance would also be much more competitive with the SEC and B10 on multiple levels.

I don't like the idea of destroying one conference to benefit another and leaving out many schools as a result like Stanford, WSU and the like. Seems unethical and unwise.

The Pac 12 was dancing on the Big 12's grave, the last thing we want to do is water down the Big 12's revenue and merge with them. It won't happen.

The opposite case could happen if managed properly, as I addressed above. Most always in commerce, fundamentals trump bravado. When fundamentals fail, generally the enterprise does as well.

Surly, I think you have it backwards. It is up to the schools to show that they are worthy of a Big12 invite. We can offer resources so they can improve their fan base once they join but there still needs to be a standard that they bring with them. That’s up to them, not us. We are not a charity.

This is not about charity and you know I was not saying that. It's about what fundamentally works best for both conferences. We can debate this to death. My conclusion now as it has been for a couple of years now is that an alliance might be the best solution for all involved. The new B12 is on solid footing. Can it be improved by the addition of a western alliance?

I think the PAC will avoid any mention of an alliance.

Sorry Surly adding schools that can’t pull their weight is charity. Their are some PAC 12 schools that will never have enough fans to be a profitable member of the Big 12. We only hurt ourselves by adding them. This is business.

How much less would KSU be willing to take to save Washington State?

Rather kill the PAC then make a play for ACCN. And if not kill, let it die

Wait for 2-6 PAC schools. Then work with espn and Fox to be the slack conference needed to liquidate the ACC, with ACC Network converted to Big 12 Network.

If 6 ACC schools go to P2, what’s left would maintain most of ACCN markets, while adding many good sized college sports centric markets of Big 16.

WVU, Cincinnati, Louisville, Pitt, Cuse, BC, NCST, Wake, GT, Miami, UCF, Houston

Iowa St, KU, KSU, Ok St, CU, Utah, AZ ASU, Baylor, Tech, TCU, BYU

Basically the same thing as sharing PAC Network- two conferences sharing a repurposed network under the Big 12 lineage and name- but with the Big 12 eliminating peer conferences, being the only other conference outside of P2 with auto CFP access. Getting down to one conference of P5 leftovers benefits all of the 24 schools shove more than marginal revenue/school deltas of permutations of two or three middle class conferences

The value isn't there though. The pool of cash to distribute is only going to be so big and there aren't enough Pac teams that are worth the payout. The ones that are will more than likley end up in the Big 12 or the B1G...

The terrible ACC TV deal is reason #1 why the Big 12 needs to cherry pick the PAC. The SEC and B1G will eventually get the ACC teams they want and several others will be Big 12 bound. This solidifies the Big 12 as the #3 conference.

That's a red herring argument. The idea is to increase wealth by maximizing resources, not decrease it.

But it's a true statement. In order to give WSU and OSU a lifeline, that means less for the Big12.

I'd have to think the B12 looked at this from every possible angle with their media partners, and it just wasn't viable. Yes, there could be some cost savings by sharing resources. Yes, there might be some increased value by getting more/better time slots.

At the end of the day, there's enough juice to take on all 10 PAC schools and not result in a pay cut for B12 members. If it was different, I think we'd be heading down that road. Instead, the B12 inked a new deal and the PAC keeps negotiating theirs.

At this point is the PAC negotiating or begging?

In order to make resource sharing work both sides need to have weaknesses to shore up. It makes more sense to have the PAC and ACC somehow pair up then have the Big12 pair up with anyone. The big 12 is in a position of strength to steal schools away, they don’t need to bargain to stay relevant.

Last year the Pac didn’t partner up becuase they thought they were in position of strength then they lost their top brands and now are very vulnerable. ACC is vulnerable in about a decade. Big12 is solidly in the 3rd place spot and shouldn’t be giving up anything unless it nets a positive return for the schools and you have a smart commish now that knows this.

Worse yet, we’d be risking a pay cut to help save a peer conference.

Imo better to do nothing and see if the PAC schools blink, with AZ starting an exodus.
