Good list of stuff to have on your mind, for sure. A few things though, from a guy who has had a Model 3 Performance for almost 4.5 years now and nearing 60k miles with it:

Phantom braking is massively overblown as an issue. At least for me. Newer Teslas have different equipment on them but I can tell you I haven't had an instance of unexpected braking while on TCC or AP in over a year now, and I use them a lot. When it was happening before software updates helped iron it out, you could learn (you as a human, I mean) when it might occur based on certain surroundings.

There are service centers in Iowa. One opened up around a year ago in Urbandale and there's one in Council Bluffs. http://www.tesla.com/findus However, the vast majority of Tesla's service work is done via mobile rangers that come to you/your car wherever you are.

Cost to put a good charger in your garage isn't too bad. Think I paid an electrician here in Waukee about $1,200 to install a new box in my garage and hook up the charger and garage heater I had.

Cold weather definitely impacts range but when you can get a full charge overnight it isn't a big deal. If I'm at 300 miles of range when I leave in the morning, on a bitterly cold day I could maybe get....220 miles of actual driving, or so? But that's plenty for daily use.
Wow, thanks so much for the update. It's great hearing from an actual owner. I notice the Model Y Performance has 21" summer tires. I think the M3P has 20". Do you swap out winters? I've done this with sports cars in the past and I hate having to deal with them but really would like the faster version.

Bought a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid a couple years ago. Fantastic car.
I think this country should focus on hybrids, as Toyota has perfected the technology over the last 20 yrs, and hasn't come out with any plans to go full EV.

I trust their knowledge, as Japan has 50-yr economic/business plans, where this country looks ahead an average of 5-yrs

Couldn't solar be integrated to extend range not to have it be continuous operation? I'm curious how much it could actually extend the drive range. Also, isn't there a company experimenting with that currently?
There are some manufacturers that are incorporating them to help the range. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an optional solar panel add-on that Hyundai says can add about 3 miles worth of charge per day. So a long way off to being able to rely on the on-board solar.

Just wait until you have to buy new batteries. All that gas and oil changes will equal out.
I've got another 92,000 miles and 7+ years of battery warrenty so I'm not very concerned about it. By that time battery replacement will look a whole lot different than it does now (and probably won't be needed until it gets to somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles based on what has been seen with higher mileage EVs).

They have a new CEO that has backpedaled on that a little.

Hybrids are nice, but they need to move more to plugin hybrids to have a much bigger impact. 90% of our driving with our van could be electric with a PHEV. That's the reason we've been looking at the Chrysler instead of another Sienna.

Have you ever seen an automated gas pump not shut off? I've literally never seen it.

Clutch your pearls, I'll save my time.
I have. At the gas station on 13th by I-35, guy left the pump running and went in, and gas was pouring out of the filler. I ran over to shut the nozzle off and went inside. Saw him go back out there very confused about why there was gas all over the side of his truck and on the ground.

Obviously the chances of something happening are pretty low but it wouldn't be good if it did happen.

I don't think anyone is clutching pearls in this thread.

Yeah I wish we had more PHEV options. Feels like it solves a lot of problems. The only problem with them is you don't get rid of all the maintenance like you can with an EV but I still think they're a great solution

Yes, the tires that come on the Performance models are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's that aren't supposed to be driven on in temps less than 40*. The tire compound will get brittle and eventually crack. I bought a different set of 19" wheels with Michelin X-Ice tires for $2k and they are fantastic on snow and ice.

It doesn't have to be your only vehicle, just your first.
Not even sure. My truck is 6 years old now and I plan on running it into the ground if I can. It's paid off and I really like it. If they improve battery life and make it a little more economical maybe, but right now I don't know or see it being awhile until I latch on.

Yes, it happened to me once and it dumped gallons of gas on the ground. That said I still set it and go in if I need a pee.

Serious answer, can't go EV until I own a house. Want a 220V charger right in my garage first. That said, plug-in hybrids would perfectly fit my lifestyle and be doable now. Traditional hybrids would be an improvement as well as more of my regular driving has transitioned to city driving. As mentioned earlier, the Maverick Hybrid (albeit not plug-in) is very appealing to me. Does what I'd ever need it to do, would double my in town MPG and be similar or marginally better on the highway. A ~40 mi range plug-in (and preferably 4WD) version would be awesome.

I don't know why we spent the last 20+ years basically skipping traditional hybrids not named Prius. They're awesome. Tons of potential that we did nothing with until recently.
