It seems there is an abundance of people in my neighborhood this year that are letting the lawn go nuts. Seems like a good way to kill your mower and the rest of the lawn laying that much grass back on top when you finally do cut it.

I couldn't stand the look of mine, last weekend, so I mowed, and seemed to break the seal on my block.
My grass is so thick right now, I don't think I'd be able to mow it at all if I waited a month.
I think it’s dumb. If you really want to help make yourself a backyard prairie. Helps endangered butterflies, beautiful, low maintenance after a while
I appreciate the reasons behind it, but after mowing Tuesday and having 12 inch dandelions pop up a couple days later it seems kind of silly. If your yard is dandelion free, plant a couple flowers for the pollenators.
The neighbor a couple doors down finally mowed today and the dandelions were so thick the mower left like 10 percent of them standing.
Our city manager already threatening to fine people and sending the city to butcher their lawns. She must not be into pollinators.
Although one of the city parks is worse than any yards I have seen so maybe I should mow it and send them a bill?

The grass in front of my son’s elementary school hasn’t been touched this year but the fields they play on have. Im not sure if it’s on purpose.
I’ve already mowed twice this month. **** the bees I want the yard looking good.
Yeah, I have a toddler and a dog so I dont put chemicals on my lawn so its not going to win any awards for best looking lawn in the neighborhood. But I refuse to be the guy that doesn't mow for weeks.
We have two dogs and three kids. I just make sure I put the weed and feed down before a good rain. We took the dogs on walks instead of letting them in the back yard until everything was fully rained in.
We haven’t mowed yet this year, even though I want to. It’s not that we’re trying to be lazy. But there’s no way we make it all of May without mowing.
If you want to dedicate a portion of your yard to a 'native' prairie look, great go ahead I actually like the look in moderation. But you either have a lawn or you have weeds. Letting it go will bite you later in the year. Especially because the ones that are not mowing are the same that won't bother bagging it when they do decide to finally mow.
If they are open fields it might be easier.
Some guys that play soccer in one of the parks mowed the soccer field themselves. Big open field on a riding mower wouldn’t take long, but they never pay people enough to have enough workers.
One year our mower needed a part that took two weeks to come in. Young couple next door saw husband mowing and said they were wondering if we died lol. Guess we know they are not going to check.
There is absolutely no benefit to doing this and it's actually harmful to the pollinators who will return to discover you mowed and struggle to find something new.
Add some flowers and other stuff to your landscaping and do more good.

I see yards overrun by dandelions that haven't been mowed yet this year. I'd be seriously pissed off if I was next to them.

Won’t anyone think of the Kentucky Bluegrass??? Dandelions just destroy the yard and soil system.
We have this 1-2 ft wide strip of grass between our driveway and retaining wall. It's supposed to be St.Augustine grass, but nothing much would ever grow there. About 5 years ago, we planted some white and yellow sweet clover in that strip. I love the smell of sweet clover.
The white sweet clover grows great in that strip, and attracts all kinds of pollinators and butterflies. We cut it down after it dies (Aug/Sep here), and the St. Augustine is now nice and thick under the sweet clover. For some reason we can't get the yellow sweet clover to grow.
Sweet clover can be invasive, so that was a concern, and we keep an eye on that, but ours hasn't spread beyond that strip.
We have a Texas Ranger shrub in the back yard that blossoms throughout the year. It too sits full of pollinators and butterflies when it blooms.
As mentioned above, there are a number of "longer term" things that can be done to help the pollinators throughout the growing season.
