Outdoor gear. I believe in good durable stuff and like REI brand tents fit that but I refuse to spend a ton.

Same with fly rods.

My lawn. I'll seed bare spots. I'll mow at appropriate intervals. I'll pick up branches that fall out of the trees. But beyond that, not likely. I'm not going to spend the money to eradicate one species and replace it with another. I don't really care if I have a dandelion or a creeping charlie mixed in. If it's green and it's ground cover, that's good enough for me.

As a bonus, not using weed killer has allowed a (presumably bird planted) patch of wild strawberries to thrive. They aren't as big or as sweet as store bought, but mashing them and making strawberry-lemonade works just fine.

To start:
Sunglasses. I lose them or will break thm somehow. $20 Walgreens polarized are the way to go.

Running music device. They're obsolete but Ipod shuffles usually malfunctioned quickly. About 6 years ago I ordered a Sandisk MP3 player for $30. It's a bit clunky and looks like a Gameboy screen but works like new.
Sandisk made some really great MP3 players. I rarely use mine anymore since I have a phone that can play mp3's and stream music, but I have no doubt if I charged the battery, it would keep working for years.

I probably won't ever buy new furniture. There's way too much good stuff out there if you're willing to spend the time shopping FB Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.

You do need to understand that you might waste time, like when you arrive to pickup and realize a couch has been used as a cat bed for a decade.

A few people have mentioned sunglasses. I generally agree. But I will mention shopgoodwill.com Goodwill stores route their higher end stuff through that website to get a nationwide audience vs the local only store shoppers. I bought a really nice pair a couple months ago that retail for $350 from that site for $40.

I should look into this for stuff like down/puffy coats.

Mom swears by the hospice stores. "Old people furniture, really good stuff! And barely used!"

She's 75, and still loves getting a deal.

My wife and I are not ones that have to "keep up with the Jones" so we're pretty practical/basic with most things. Live in a modest house, usually keep our cars as long as we can. Just sold a 2007 to buy a new one and our other is a 2015 and we have no plans to replace either any time soon. We don't care to buy vehicles with all the options that add to the price so we go pretty basic with cloth interior and no sunroof or fancy wheels, etc. Never been ones to buy expensive clothing. Add to what someone else mentioned I won't pay for someone to do something I can for less like home repairs or projects or something like replacing an air filter or light bulb on your vehicle as the shops all charge way too much for something that is usually simple to do.

I don't have great seats for my season tickets at ISU as we only do the non-donor levels so have had the same 10th row corner balcony seats for BB for a long time and our FB seats usually in the first 10 rows looking across the endzone. Seats are OK to me, I can't justify spending hundreds more just to watch 6 or 7 FB games or about 20 BB games in closer seats. I'd like to be debt free at some point and retire sooner than later so would rather spend money in a practical way and try to pay off debt so I can maybe splurge and enjoy some of these things later on when I may more time retired and hopefully help my kids pay for college too. I don't want to work into my 70's, 60 is my optimistic retirement target or at least be in a position I can maybe take on an easier job with less hours to carry me into age 65 so usually have a long term outlook when it comes to my spending habits.

Clothes.

I'm retired. Mostly shorts and tees. (Some ISU ones I have spent a bit more on.) Some dressier shorts and polo/golf for 'nice.'

Some light-weight 'nicer' sweats for cooler days and some jeans when I want to feel a bit less Walmartey.

I have some dressier stuff I maybe wear every 3 years for a funeral or wedding.

Always browse the clearance racks at Walmart as the seasons change.

Headphones and super high end TVs

Headphones is mainly because music isn’t necessarily a huge part of my life where the quality would mean much and the big kicker, I’m deaf in my right ear. So like I would need a 50% off deal to even consider it.

High end TVs, I mean I get it and I can sorta tell when a TV is better but it’s not so far and away that it’s even worth it once the TV is capable of 4K. Like the UHQHLHMHLVD or whatever is just simply not worth it in my opinion. Maybe if I was doing an extreme heavy duty theater room but I would probably go the projector route at that point anyway.

Upgrading seats on flights. I just don’t see how it is worth spending at least $800 more than normal seats. The difference is marginal and not worth the cost.

Domestically, yea not that worth it in general. But overseas flights, I can barely tolerate regular economy anymore. I’ll do it if I can’t upgrade for a reasonable cost but it’s exhausting in its own right.

Sunglasses. I won't spend more than $50, I don't think that is too much. I have a couple friends that spend in the hundreds.
My prime example. I loved my Oakleys that I had. I bought a pair, misplaced them. Then, my wife bought the same pair for me with my initials on them. I misplaced those too lol. I break and lose them too easily. So I bought like 4-5 cheap pair from Shein. I miss those Oakleys and realize sunglasses are not created equal, but can't justify a 3rd time with them.

Ear buds/Headphones - Just can't pull the trigger on buying something pricey even though quality probably would be worth it. Rocked a pair of lower end JBLs that I got free at one of my wife's work functions till they fell apart. Now I'm using some cheap wired headphones I'm sure I "borrowed" from work. It's got a built in mic and volume controls, good ear pad size, and quality is fine.
This is where I will pay for some nice headphones. Quality matters for sound and you generally get what you pay for. So, having those bose noise cancelling headphones are worth it to me!

For me, I'd say clothes. I don't care about much for name brands. Yes, I do like the occasional decent brands for sporting clothes sometimes to keep up showing my teams and occasional express stuff, but I don't spend a lot on clothes or buy that often. I will wear stuff out until there's holes and shirts are cutoffs and get good use out of stuff before it is retired.

Another are cell phones. I like iphone and have the 12, but I upgraded from the 6 and that is good enough for me. I had my last one 5-6 years before I finally made the jump, only because the software updates and app updates were basically cutoff. Unless I damage mine, I'll be trying to hold onto it as long as possible. It's not like there are a huge upgrade in options on these newer ones right now.

I've already mentioned sunglasses. I just know that I've tried to be less materialistic and go for more experiences and create memories. That's something my wife and I will agree on. We try to spend money on the vacations and less on possessions. I do value my camera/equipment because that is a passion of mine and a hobby I enjoy. That is something I will spend money on too.

Generally unless I'm going to an Italian restaurant I won't buy pasta at a restaurant.

This one and the steak one are weird, not gonna lie. Like what do you order at a restaurant then? Because why even go to a restaurant if you can make it better at home? This list could technically be infinite

I go to a restaurant for entertainment, food, and drinks that I wouldn’t try at home or don’t feel like trying. Probably in that order too.

Pretty much anything I can't cook in 15 mins at home from the same jar they use is what I order at a restaurant.
