I had no idea CY Stephens was in bad shape, and I also realized that it's been legitimately 15 years since I've been in that building. I remember thinking it was incredible, but I realized that was a long f'ing time ago.

Went to Chappelle there a few years ago and it's definitely run down/dated. Probably one of the worst/ugliest concert (performance) venues I've been in. Nothing screams elegance like concrete.

"Howard Heemstra (a professor of mine) worked with Crites & McConnell in the design of that auditorium, and he tells the story of how, in designing the space for acoustics, they used a way of projecting light beams and you could tell how the sounds were going to be reflected." It was also an acoustical marvel at the time.
It would be an absolute shame for the University to lose an architecturally significant performance hall. But it's an age-old story: Arts being sacrificed at the altar of Athletics.

That was so stupid. They had the project all set up. University was kicking in. City was on board. No public bond or new sales or property tax hikes. Just an extra hotel tax that out of towners would be paying. Got voted down.

Yeah, it seemed pretty shortsighted to have voted that down. On the other hand, that was something of a half-measure compared to CyTown and if that had happened, perhaps Pollard doesn't feel the need to pursue CyTown.

I have never had a problem with CY and was there just last March. The drink lines get a little long but if you know what kind of crowd to expect that’s seems like a manageable thing. I’m there to be in the audience and amenities mean less to me than at a football or bball game. I will say the outside looks a little rough. Also secret bathroom FTW.

Great interview with Pollard. He was on for most of the first hour. Here are some of the topics:
  • He has been here 18 years, longer than any other AD or President in the Big 12.
  • "Big 12" name is liked by the incoming schools.
  • Raising some of the parking lots 8 feet.
  • Doesn't appreciate the dark, concrete design of the ISC.
  • Very cooperative with the We Will Collective.
  • ISU/EIU football game looks good for the future.
  • ISU/Drake/UNI basketball games don't make sense in terms of risk/reward for the NCAA tournament.
  • NCAA tournament matchups are made by a computer.
I would rather play Drake and UNI than Nothern Tech A and M State U. Or in other words the schools that are below 300 in the ratings. Bad for the fans to play to many of those teams and bad for our resume to play to many of those kind of teams.

But, if they won't play us at Hilton, then I understand not playing them.

Last year I especially noticed the very top sides of CY were crumbling/peeling.

This is just wrong. The University “sacrificed” arts and kicked the problem to Athletics, who might just save it in the long run.
Perhaps, but it was kicked to an AD who by his own words appears to not appreciate or even understand the significance of the building, as is the case with far too many people whose world is Athletics.

there is no need to play uni/drake when the big 12 is as good as it is.
you can't guarantee the Big 12 will always be good. Since around 2014 until last year, it had a good run, probably the top or top 2 conferences year in and year out. But, with NIL, you will see other leagues with schools get great players that may have ended up at Tech or KSU, or they will steel the good players from the Big 12. Plus we will not being going round robin anymore, with more teams, that means a bigger bottom to league so the opportunity to play weaker teams. In the future, we need to beef up our non a little.

I wish we'd play Creighton every year.
That would be a good one.

Thats a loss you could afford to take.

There no point in taking a loss to UNI/Drake when the losses are going to happen in the Big 12.

And yet I've been to shows when the performers (musicians at the time) specifically mention - from the stage - the beauty of the building and the amazing acoustics. I appreciate Stephens Auditorium for what it does and the vision President Hilton had in creating the whole center. It definitely is not everyone's cup of tea. However, when the university keeps putting so much on its deferred maintenance list, over time facilities like this pay the price.

Possibly true. You're right.. we can't guarantee it and losing the round robin will hurt.

BUT also- I have a hard time believing these teams are just suddenly going to up and suck. Coaches don't jump from the Big 12 to look for other opportunities like they do with football.

Not many great players are transferring out of the Big 12 or off of the top teams in the Big 12.

Go look at some of the players who transferred in this year. Dickinson, Kuluma, Abmas, Cryer (stayed in Big 12) Kriisa, Jesse Edwards, Tylor Perry,

Those guys are considered 6 of the Top 12 transfers this season.

The big 12 isn't going anywhere anytime soon from a competitive standpoint in basketball.

The stage curtain alone is a marvel. CY Stephens is an incredible example of late Mid Century Modern architecture in the Brutalist style. I wonder if the AD at St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, MN thinks the same of their mostly concrete Abbey Church as Pollard thinks of Stephens.

We played at Creighton a few years ago, and won, so I'm assuming they'll be giving us a return game in Hilton in the near future. That would be a great long term home and home type arrangement. Could develop into quite a rivalry. Two quality programs from two different conferences, but in close proximity.
