I'm not sure if this is cryptic or if I just don't really understand. Would the Iowa DCI have the ability to remove a player's eligibility this season? I had thought this was great news, as long as the NCAA says it's good then we can follow these guidelines. Unless you are trying to say the DCI could make things worse
The DCI has information on amounts and sports bet on. So their info will determine which NCAA penalty levels are applicable for each student athlete.

Plus Iowa state laws apply in addition to NCAA rules.

From DMR:

"For all other wagering-related violations, such as betting on professional sports, the total dollar value of the wagers will be taken into consideration with the following terms for reinstatement:

  • $200 or less: Sports wagering rules and prevention education. The previous penalty was loss of at least 10% of a season.
  • $201-$500: Loss of 10% of a season of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education. The previous penalty was up to 50% of a season.
  • $501-$800: Loss of 20% of a season of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education. The previous penalty could have cost an athlete an entire season.
  • More than $800 gambled: Loss of 30% of eligibility, plus rules and prevention education. The NCAA stipulated that for cumulative wagering that "greatly" exceeds $800 could result in additional loss of eligibility."

Question- does Iowa law have different punishments for different betting levels? Or is it is just “athletes a can’t bet”? If just can’t bet - Let’s say a player pleads guilty to a misdemeanor and pays a $100 fine- and part of the plea is the DCI doesn’t release the amount bet. where does that leave Iisu and the NCAA ? Do they just assume under $200? Do the have a way to find out the totals ?

I don't have a clue. Unfortunately, the Iowa regulations that went into place with legalized sports betting are being interpreted and consumed differently by different parties. Personally, it doesn't read as it's a crime to bet as an athlete as long as you're of age. But people much smarter on legal matters don't think it's that cut and dry. I have to believe they think that for some legitimate reason.

Also, Iowa State received names that are over the betting age, so there has to have been some probable cause to start investigating those people. None of us know why exactly.

There is a lot of wild speculation in this thread as there has been from page 1. What misdemeanor crime is being committed in your hypothetical? Under 21 wagering is a scheduled violation (a fine) so it’s unlikely that there will be a plea agreement as you describe.

May be a stupid question, but do the coaches have discretion as to what games the suspensions apply to? Do the games have to be served consecutively? Can they pick the three games for example?
Pretty certain the suspensions would take effect immediately so the coaches have no say.

Nothing more inspiring to the opposition from Spring practices to two a days to be told you can't possibly win this game as you dont have the coaching, talent or crowd to be on the same playing field. On really. Hold. My. Beer.

UNI sucks. Plus the new OL coach will have the OL ampted for this game.

So from my understanding this all got started with Iowa baseball players betting on the Iowa / South Carolina WBB tournemanet game. Does this mean those baseball players are f****d?
