I hate them coming out and saying they'll take one more. How far down the list are they willing to go to check that box?

There is nothing binding the Big 12 to get a 14th team. That is a play by the Big 12 to get Arizona to apply now rather than sit on their hands. I give it under 5% chance UCONN is truly a candidate but rather a pawn to get Arizona.

This guy sums it up nicely:

Love this one.

5. Arizona State

The biggest attraction to Arizona State would be the Phoenix market. But, like Washington, would that market care about ASU in the Big 12? The Sun Devils have seen attendance dip over the last five years at football games by 11%. That’s with USC and UCLA in the PAC. Can anyone expect the gate receipt to improve if it was matchups against Baylor, Iowa State, and Kansas? I’m skeptical.
The way this board loves vacation spots for ISU games, I have a feeling the gate would increase, we’d buy the leftover tickets.

These guys indicate that Oregon has "pissed off" the Big Ten and probably aren't a candidate for membership. Wonder what that's about...

That is a ploy to put pressure on teams thinking about jumping, and it will do just what they intended.
I don’t think it’s a ploy if we have to have 9 conference games per our TV contract. If that’s the case we need a 14th team, mathematically speaking

If they stay at an odd number of teams, they have to go to 8 or 10 games. It is mathematically impossible to play 9 games with 13 teams.

Ultimately this comes down to price. The networks drive all this. If ESPN/Fox decide to pay for a team they will move the respective conference.

So if Fox doesn’t want to pay full share for OU/Wash in the B1G, they and ESPN might pay partial shares for them in the B12. They get two teams at a discount. For at least 5 years. When they are in coat cut mode that would make sense to me.

It also fully secures the west coast for the B12.

That said if I am USC and UCLA I am screaming about travel partners at every B1G meeting.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but I thought the reason why there isn't an open invite from the B1B for UOUW is because USC didn't want them to come along. And if that is truly the case... then USC isn't all that interested in travel partners.

Wasn’t there a rumor Phil Knight flew in to meet with the Big 10 when USCLA left? If that is true, my feeling is the Big 10 doesn’t want to deal with that. And, rightfully so, they’ve been getting along pretty well without the Ducks.

That’s why UCONN is on the table. We will have 14 or 16 teams. Big12 would want more money for 10 conference games, media partners would want to pay less for 8.

Thanks for sharing this. I found the part about how 4 ACC teams were going to sue to get out of the GOR most interesting. He seemed quite certain that the attempt was going to be made. Will be fun to watch it all play out.
