Like the OP, QR codes haven't come to the rock I'm apparently living under. I assume the food at different times is because you are essentially doing separate checks and each person/group orders from their own phone. If you and your SO go out to eat you can order both meals at the same time from one phone and it works like "normal", correct?

Sounds like they need the QR code at each table to be different so multiple people ordering from the same table get grouped together.
I think you're talking about multiple things here.
The most common thing you're going to find, when you run into a QR code at a restaurant, is that it just takes you to their menu, either in your phone's browser or by downloading a PDF of it. You order just like you normally would, though, with the waiter/waitress, not on your phone.

Now, there are some places where you might have the option to order through your phone, but they are far less common. Some fast food places have their own app. McDonalds was mentioned as one. And there are presumably some sit-down places that have the same, but I wouldn't say they're super common outside of the fast food/fast casual realm.

Everywhere I've been they have printed menus available if my phone is low on charge or left in car or home/hotel to recharge, even in Europe, I just ask the host or waitress for one.

Edit: what drives me crazy is chip/magnetic readers, non-standardization. Put it in left, right, upside down, right side up, clean it error reading it, try again, while everyone is waiting in line. PULL out another card and try again!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I'm in the minority. I think they're great. I don't need to handle some grimy menu that the last customer put their nasty ass hands all over. Half of them are ripped and stained and who knows what else.

"Welcome to Olive Garden. Would you like anything to drink? ... Ok, I'll go get that while you hold this used Kleenex!!"

I'll take a qr code over that mess any day.
Sounds reasonable unless you understand the level of filth on the average cell phone. https://ihpi.umich.edu/news/your-cell-phone-10-times-dirtier-toilet-seat-heres-what-do-about-it

Yeah, but I'm already using my phone. It's not introducing any new filth to the party that isn't already there. I carried my phone with me into the restaurant. And previous groups of restaurant patrons haven't held my phone, as is the case with many physical menus.
Sure and people take their phones to the head with them where they get a nice coating of other people’s fecal coliforms with every flush.
Hopefully the paper menu stays at the table and hostess stand rather than make a trip to the John for a fresh coat of feces.
Neither is exactly a sanitary option.
Just leave both alone and order the special.

I think his point is more that you're going to get those coliforms on your hands when you use your phone, regardless. Unless you alcohol-wipe it down every other time you use it other than when you scan a restaurant QR code, phones are ubiquitous at this point. The turd germs are getting on your hands at some point, either now or later. With the codes, you're just minimizing the amount of germ contact by not adding one more source to the mix.

But you are 100% correct - little of this is sanitary!

I was at a restaurant recently (small town) and they had physical menus but if you wanted to see prices you had to scan the QR code on the table. I think that is going to become more and more common, especially if this inflationary economy lasts for much longer.

Printing menus just you change the pricing can get very expensive.

Wait, so they had printed menus with no prices on them? That’s just stupid. Sounds like they are trying to scam people in a way.

I’ve seen where a restaurant will have their menu on their website without prices. It never been to a restaurant where they didn’t have a price on their menu.

Yeah if the menu is dirty, I'm sure the kitchen is probably spotless.

The QR code for menus has been happening for quite some time since Covid. What is new is scanning the QR code to pay at the table, which I find very helpful!
I feel like if we could somehow merge this comment with the tipping culture thread, the true potential of this forum would have been achieved.

I'm seeing this quite a lot now. My bigger beef is when you pay on their handheld machine and the waitress stands right there and says "It's going to ask you a question" and the three choices you're given is 18%, 20%, 22%....and if you choose "other" she knows it. Just awkward as hell.
Do servers know if you've tipped using the keypad on the stationery pad. They can't see it.
I normally tip 20% when I'm served. Traditional meal. Picked up a big BBQ meal recently. Walk in, it's bagged and ready, $190. She says you've got a question to answer. Cheapest was 15%. For tossing my food in a bag? Nearly $30 for that? Nope. Hit "none" and off I went. Felt slightly guilty. Give me a 5% option for that kind of service.

Y'all are a bunch of germophobes. Rub a little dirt on that scratch and use your pocket knife to cut off a slice of summer sausage. :D
This was my exact thought. I remember the days when we had to pay with good ole well travelled unsanitized cash that had probably only been in a few thousand hands. I wonder how many lives we lost because of that. :)

I still have a tendency to pay is cash especially at small businesses, I figure why have them take the CC skim percentage. My local craft brewery is where I do it most often.

What is this thing called "cash" that you speak of?
