I am not condoning what Dekker's did but his attorney is correct, this is a matter for Iowa State and the NCAA. Under Iowa Code there is no law preventing him from placing the bets, the Iowa Code is specific to the gambling entity that they have to have controls in place to prevent such a thing from happening, but not the individual gambler themselves. I've posted the Iowa Code a few times in one of these threads.

Now the tampering with evidence is a no no, but can you really tamper with evidence of something that wasn't illegal?
If he placed bets in 2021, which seems to be possible, that’s underage gambling and is breaking the law. Assuming that’s what he is accused of tampering with.

If he was using his mom's account to place bets while he was underage, it's absolutely illegal.

I think that the alleged crime under 715A is that the identity of the person placing the wager was concealed to cover up the wrongdoing (both under 21 wagering and the NCAA violation as mentioned in complaint).

But I will anxiously await the results of the DCI investigation at U of I and UNI and maybe that will shed more light on the issue…

Everything I've heard from UNI says that they had a couple staffers indicated but no athletes. They were swept at the same time. We'll see if that holds up, but that was the word when all this started to leak.

No sympathy for Dekkers at all here.

He knew the rules and broke them an obscene amount of times and tried to cover it up. That's one of our team leaders? How entitled or stupid do you have to be to try that ****? Especially betting on your own team.

The program is better off without someone like that in it

At bare minimum play good if you're gonna do that ****

Iowa Code says underage gambling is a fine of $645.
Iowa Code says the person ALLOWing an underage person to make illegal bets is a simple misdemeanor.

So Hunter should be fined $645 and his mom get a simple misdemeanor. Seems DCI blew this out of proportion.

Maybe but I don't see anything in 715A that references Gambling
