Well to assist those of us that love numbers here are some more from a source I don't know and don't think he is any smarter than the rest of us: (Big 12 in dark high light, ACC & ND in italic high light) Hold on to your pencils here it comes:

College Football Teams TV Viewership Rankings (2015-2019) From Zac Miller 8/12/21 Run it Back With Zac

"Conference championship games and bowl games are not included in these numbers. Games that do not have available data were counted as zero.”

1. Ohio State (5.19M) 2. Alabama (5.09M) 3. Michigan (4.18M) 4. Notre Dame (3.61M) 5. LSU (3.22M) 6. Auburn (3.12M) 7. Georgia (2.91M) 8. Oklahoma (2.90M) 9. Clemson (2.67M) 10. Penn State (2.55M)

11. Florida (2.46M) 12. Wisconsin (2.27M) 13. Texas (2.269M) 14. Florida State (2.23M) 15. Michigan State (2.20M) 16. Southern Cal (1.98M) 17. Texas A&M (1.851M) 18. Tennessee (1.849M) 19. Oklahoma State (1.64M) 20. Mississippi (1.61M)

51. Syracuse (694K

Who you played and where you played makes a difference. Change the opponents and the numbers will change. Take away games against the top 20 above and the team numbers will drop. I have not compared this chart directly to the prior ones from College Sports Info, but the general positioning of the teams seems similar.

I think if you blend this older data with the 2022 charts things may become clearer. Have fun, but don't stay up too late.

Anyone think viewership will drop as geographic rivals are cut?

I think eventually they will

Well if you think the Pac schools will stay the same or increase going to the big ten then there are only 3 schools (TCU, OKST, WVU) ranked in the top 30 who have lost rivals and arguably OUT wasn’t a WVU rival.

I think that geographic rivals primarily generate localized interest and seats in the seats. What we need to do in the next few years is to advertise the heck out of our new cross region games and thereby spread the interest in our teams beyond our formerly regionalized teams. West Virginia might want to compare mountains with Colorado. Iowa State can have November/December fun at Central Florida (feature Disney World). Show the Central Florida fans some mountains. Advertise the unique features of the various schools and locations. Drum up some excitement about every game this year and next.

Notre Dame is going to save the day. They are going to start a "student-first" league that doesn't emphasize NIL. Programs like Cal & Stanford will join as well as any PAC12 & ACC castaways. ND will be an affiliate of this league but will retain their independent status and will continue to get an annual auto-qualifier berth to the CFP. Their deal with NBC will be extended and the new league will have a streaming deal with Peacock.
Notre Dame will start it but refuse to join and keep their independent money.

Great data but it leaves one very important component out, which is where was the game broadcasted. A game, at night on ABC or ESPN will have better ratings than a game on BTN or ESPN+. The more people that can view the game will mean higher ratings for the game. How many times did Ohio State or Alabama play on the major providers, ESPN, CBS, ABC or Fox compared to a school like ISU? When ISU games were shown on one of the major networks, its ratings were very good, not Alabama numbers, but a decent rating, compared to when they played on a secondary network or were streamed.

For most of the schools where the game is broadcast is the most important part in getting higher ratings. In the B12, OU and UT were broadcasted more on over the air and ESPN than the rest of the conference and got better ratings. How did UT do on their LHN games rating wise? They were horrible.

with unbalanced schedules you also have to look at opponents. like, syracuse looks decent on that 2022 list, but they played notre dame and clemson on abc, and likely pulled in a ton of their viewers when they were leading #5 clemson in the 4q.
