There's a lot of hope around the Tight Ends but they've also never done anything on the field. I'm cautiously optimistic but not expecting any of them to be Charlie Kolar.
Expecting them to be Charlie would be ridiculous. I'm simply saying that there is a lot of young talent in that room.

We're a developmental program. It doesn't take magic for a younger TE to better understand the playbook, be adjusted to the demands of the program, and get bigger and stronger. It isn't rocket science.

But again we are just assuming we see this happen when very frankly it's not happened with the kind of regularity it needed to over the last 2 years. The guys that should have ascended into the spots vacated by our outgoing players just haven't done it. So maybe these new guys buck the trend, step in and are stars. But I guess I'm still just leery of the idea we should have heightened expectations for a team that's lost a large, large majority of its production from last year.

I haven't read thru this thread but has it been discussed why the State of Iowa DCI decided to investigate the ISU and U of I athletes? I have not read where any other state government has done likewise. I wonder what the motivation was to pursue this investigation.

Which is why numerous changes to the coaching staff were made this offseason, including the strength and conditioning coach

Edit: I'll add that I don't think as much "production" is lost on the offensive side of the ball. Xavier is obviously the biggest loss. But it wasn't like Dekkers was lighting it up. He struggled making timely decisions and had quite a few turnovers in the red zone. Brock was injured for most of the year. I don't think the drop off offensively is as large as it seems on the surface. Outsiders will say "Iowa State lost its best QB, WR, and RB". But 2 of those three weren't overly productive in the first place

The book's software detected suspicious activity. It's part of the license to operate in Iowa that they are to ensure that anyone collected to athletics doesn't bet. Iowa, Iowa State UNI (and maybe Drake and Upper Iowa) have geofences around their athletic facilities that detect when anyone walks into those buildings with the book's app on their phone. The book notified the DCI that then investigated further.

Every state gets to come up with their own licensure rules so we have no idea how this is/will be handled in other states plus a lot of the football hotbed states don't have legal gambling at all.

You’re still having to explain this to people?

Thanks, that makes sense. I randomly check into CF so if you stated this earlier, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. IMO, the players were told not to do it and they did it anyway and are subject to whatever transpires from their own decisions. Betting on your own team is bad and betting on your team to lose is really bad.

We have seen guys ascend into key roles on defense each year and I expect the same to happen this year. Our secondary may be the best ever. Dom Orange is likely a future all Big 12 player. As for the offense, last year was a struggle but a lot of that had to do with the number of stars on offense we lost all at once. Covid allowed guys like Charlie and Chase to stay an extra year and then Breece left a year early. Losing Charlie, Chase, Brock, and Breece all together was caused by special circumstances. Programs like Iowa State are not going to reload from those type of losses without some step back. This year should have been a return to normalcy, but we have this stupid gambling situation. It is possible that we do better than expected, but it is also possible that we have to wait a year to return to the top part of the Big 12. I am choosing to enjoy the progress we will see in our young guys this year. Some will get more playing time due to the gambling losses and it should result in a better team in the future.

And we have 4 beers, a cold brew, and goddam Cy endorsed vodka to get us through.

Not buyin' it. In conference play last season, ISU had the worst scoring offense in the Big 12 by 9 PPG, and the 3rd best scoring defense. I'm not sure how one would get "about average" out the that. Wins are what matters, right? And wins are determined by what team has the most points at the end of the game.

The way I do math...might be right...might be wrong:

good defense + terrible offense + bad special teams = below average

4 wins + 8 losses = below average
I was told there would be no math!

I'll show myself out, again. :D

We lost most of our impact guys. The arguement you are making is a terrible one. We lost half of our starters off a very average team. IT's fine if you are trying to sugar coat this and give yourself hope. However, what you are saying just does not hold water at all. The guy who threw the most interceptions in power 5. Beat out the guy behind him. So how good is that guy. You are arguing like a Hawkeye troll right now. The back up is better. Ummm no he is not. Also, I am not saying they should not be kicked off the team, they should. So not sure how you are trying to make that part of the debate.
Oh noo, we lost some first year starters from a 4-8 team. What are we going to do?? Misewell burn the program down. No sense in rolling out other higher rated recruits who have had 8 months to learn under basically a new coaching staff full of proven winners who have put guys into the NFL at their respected positions. The travesty!

I'd love to hear an argument on how we didn't lose alot of guys from an average team last year.

Top 3 receiver in school history (X), top DL in school history (Will) , our QB (Dekkers), our starting RB (Brock), our 2nd best DL (MJ Anderson), our RT (Remsburg), our center (Downing), our starting NG (Lee), our starting MLB (Vance) and probably our best TE by the end of last year (Hanika).
I'm gonna need some more proof.

I am so sick of this ******* off season. I'm just ready for the season to get underway so we can either celebrate a great turnaround or put another crap season behind us and move on to basketball.
Oh, but you will think back and miss all the fun we had this off season.

:confused::)

I'm not so sure Dekkers is much of a loss.
I sort of feel bad for Hunter, but not really, from what we have heard about him lately, and for what he did with the gambling. He made his bed... Maybe we will hear 'his' side of the story someday?

I am now looking forward to "next man up QB"! Time to move on.

Pure comedy. The backups are better. Did you grow up a Hawkeye fan? That is Hawk logic. Play the second string guy.
