Pure comedy. The backups are better. Did you grow up a Hawkeye fan? That is Hawk logic. Play the second string guy.
Norton wasn't a backup. Dean wasn't a backup. JR Singleton was not a backup and Dom Orange is going to show his presence early. Remsburg was injured for the first 4 games of the year last year and could be back at a similar time period this year.

The only true backup that is going to see his first actual significant minutes is going to be Rocco, which I agree, is a highly important position to be sprung into. But there's a reason why he was recruited well out of HS (you don't get a scholarship from Kiffin for being a slouch). I'd say let's see what the young buck can do.

That's where I'll say I initially believed he was only talking about the gambling guys, and the reason I thought that was because the guys we lost to the NFL were all known to be leaving (outside of MJ).
I wonder how MJ Anderson is doing? I think he signed with the Seahawks?

Anyone know where he stands with them and if he might make the team?

I do not but man it'd have been awesome had he stayed. Moot since he didn't but him and Tyler on the other side would've been a force.

Higher rated recruits. haha

2018 Ranked 55th
2019 Ranked 51 in recruit rankings
2020 ranked 48th in recruit rankings
2021 61st in recruit rankings
2022 50th ranked in recruit rankings

Yeah we are loaded with backup players who are highly ranked.
You should go through those 2018 and 2019 classes and read off some of the names you're currently making fun of lol

Where did they say the backups are better? There's (supposedly) good talent coming up through and there's a few players that put gambling in front of being eligible to play football on scholarship so they won't be there.

It was going to be a rebuilding type year as it was so I'm not sure why anyone is even worked up about it if ISU happens to not be good again.

That all said I'm still on the 5-7 wins train.

Oh noo, we lost some first year starters from a 4-8 team. What are we going to do?? Misewell burn the program down. No sense in rolling out other higher rated recruits who have had 8 months to learn under basically a new coaching staff full of proven winners who have put guys into the NFL at their respected positions. The travesty!
I actually don't disagere here.

The biggest loss in the whole ordeal is the experience the guys had. First year starters or not, it's still live game reps.

But losing guys that weren't super productive to begin with or battled injuries last year off of a 4-8 team isn't a that big of a deal to me.

No doubt there are, however, the argument being made was we have better rated recruits coming up in those positions. We don't actually. We have basically the same rated recruits.
Yeah that's fair, but it's also fluid right? So some years you aren't going to recruit as heavy at certain positions due to x,y,z or something along those lines. I think our entire point was that we do have solid recruits and players in position to step in. Will they? Absolutely no one knows. That's why I'm not saying we're 100% going bowling or anything along those lines. I do think though, that the overall team could be better than last years due to comradery / culture / team dynamics or whatever you want to call it.

Overall, I just want to see us improve from the start to the end of the season and not give away games. I think we're going to be in a lot of games.

But they were still better than the backups last year so I don't see how it isn't still a drop in talent. So this program just isn't really talented right now? There isn't even close to as much talent as there was in the program 2 years ago. Where are the new Mike Rose's and Brock Purdy's?

I guess I don't know (and am too lazy to look it up so could be wrong on the ISU assessment) how other schools have done with similar recruiting classes, but aside from a few diamonds in the rough, the NFL draft would say ISU has not been that talented the whole time vs. the w/l records.

Because that's not how it works. This isn't a vacuum. Guys progress differently than others. That's why some years there are underclassman that take an upperclassman's position even though the upperclassman has been in the program longer. I'd say that the program IS talented, it's just inexperienced and young in some positions. In other positions, it's chalk full of experience and VERY talented (see our secondary).

Forget the NFL draft. Where are the all-conference type of guys? I don't even see that on the roster anymore.

There will be a few like every year.

Was Hall a projected All-Conference guy entering 2019?

Every year college football teams lose good players to the draft and/or graduation, and every year those teams replace them with new guys or guys who were backups. It's the nature of college football and fun to watch players grow from being a backup to the starter.

I'd love to talk after that game but it's one singular game so even if they do very well I'm not going to rant and rave about it to those who think we're going to suck. History shows it's going to be a tough game, and I'm sure there will be some on here that come out of that game thinking we suck if we only win by even two scores, even though we've had to get incredibly lucky getting out of that game with some of our best talent in school history. Too early of an evaluation imo.
