Of course. That's because we're young and inexperienced at the skill positions.

Question:
How many Big 12 teams would have swapped for Purdy, Butler, Lazard, Kohler, Montgomery, or Hall before they got a chance to show what they could do?

Answer:
Not many.
Completely agree on calling us young and inexperienced at the skill positions.

I object to those claiming we have "talent". I think what they really mean is "I hope we have talent because some guys had a few mid level SEC offers out of high school" .... which is not worth much IMO.

Also-- it was pretty easy to see Purdy, Lazard, Kohler, Montgomery and Hall were talented right away. You know it when you see it, even if in limited action.

I can't name one guy who strikes me as... oh yeah.. that guy is about to break out. In previous years I could do that very easily amongst our returning players.

All just my opinion, we will find out over the next few months. Go cyclones.

Lazard was a 4 Star who turned down Notre Dame but when was it obvious with the other bolded?

It took a good half of a season for any of them to start showing real potential. Hall showed glimpses of being a strong runner early but wasn't dominant or anything until mid-October 2019 after being out with injury.

I don't even know if Purdy did much of anything before being thrown out there at Okie State. He was also at least lightly recruited by some Saban guy.

And I'd say it's pretty easy to see that new players like Kohl, Sama, Sadowsky, and Higgins (just to name a few) are very talented right away and could easily break out this season.

You can view the glass as half empty if you like. I'm going to view it as half full.

How many have seen these folks in real P5 action on either side of the debate?

It's cliche but a season really is a process and the speed of the game and comfort take a while to get settled for young or inexperienced players.

Perhaps they don't pan out but some writing them off like 'well they're not an NFL starter caliber so what is ISU even doing!?' during fall camp is a bit much.

It's kind of an opposite spin of like 2021 with 'ISU is loaded with experienced players from a good team so winning should just happen' takes.

At this point why are you still a fan with that negative opinion for the whole team?

Sorry - is a requirement for a fan that you can't discuss potential talent deficiencies at certain positions?

Would you prefer if I say 2 nice things for every one bad thing? Is this 1st grade?

What is the basis for your evaluation for talent deficiencies? And what is it compared to in successful seasons?

Well, you've already said like 3 bad ones, looking forward to reading a positive post from you.

Exactly. There will be people writing off many of these kids before they've played half a season, and I'd reckon to guess they said the same thing about Breece Hall when he wasn't producing much his freshman year. Fact of the matter is that you're not going to get tremendous production from true freshman out of the gates. Those guys are either absolute diamonds in the rough (Purdy) or they're 5 stars playing for blue bloods.

We do have though, lots of redshirt freshman and sophomores who have been in the program, who were solid recruits, and *should* be ready to play at this level. There are times we don't get to see them excel because a lot of it was done behind the scenes. That's what I'm hoping will happen. We are undoubtedly a developmental program and I don't think it's ridiculous to say that we're going to see a lot of new talent out on that field that we haven't gotten the opportunity to see yet.

Define talent deficiency. Do you just mean like inexperienced? A few posts ago you mentioned not being able to name a guy that stood out. At this point can any of us?

Maybe the receivers weren't open enough in the close up footage of practice that doesn't show any sort of evidence of set plays, defense or anything that tells us much of anything.

I know that it's 'Bama so they had players all over, but look at what imo one of the most dominant, automatic players in recent memory did his freshman year.

I'd also say that although it's not his 1st season, Dom O is primed for a huge breakout type year.

I'd also say T Onyedim and TJ Tampa are also in that category too (non 1st year primed for breakout seasons).
