Good news bad news is they are both freshman.
JJ is the future.. But let's not ruin him by forcing him into action against an elite defense like Iowa..

I'd rather he redshirt and preserve the eligibility. What we saw from Rocco on Saturday can get you 6 wins, if the defense and special teams keep it up.
Yes and no. Because the defense is going to face better offenses so it will need more help at some point.

Agree Rocco looks like he can get us to a bowl but the offense will need to make massive improvements throughout the season. It'll be hard to get to a bowl without that happening.

And in college athletics today... most don't wait for the future. Hopefully JJ does but I think we need to be hopeful being a local kid etc helps but also realistic about the world of athletics today and what it can mean

I hope your right but.. .... its harder for coaches now than ever before with kids I think. I hadn't the old rules but no one sits anymore. Not at that position anyways.

Rocco is obviously the guy. I'd be surprised if Kohl plays Saturday. Honestly the only game I think for sure he sees time in is probably Ohio. Cause there aren't any gimmes on our schedule after that and unless we start scoring at a higher rate than we have for the last 2+ years - they're going to be 1-2 score games in all likelihood which probably means Rocco.

Which based on a very small sample size this year it should be.
That true that in today’s NIL world that you got to start younger players if you don’t you might lose them. I guess I would just point to the fact that JJ signed with this team under the impression he was already going to sit this year and maybe even next if the team still had dekkers.

To me ratings don’t mean anything the moment you step on campus. If Rocco continues to beat out JJ each year, so be it. I want the best player starting and I trust the staff to make the decision on who will get them the most wins.

Agree. It should be whosever best. Honestly I think the only issue is they are so close elgibility wise. That's why I doubt in 2-3 years they're both here. I hope to heck to be wrong. Its just with 1 year inbetween them presuming JJ redhirts... kids don't want to sit.

And I won't blame anyone for that, if that eventually comes to pass.

If not, that's awesome and better for the program.

To me, it looked like JJ had one read and if it wasn't open he was going to tuck and run. He seemed a bit skittish in the pocket, which is to be expected. I'm hopeful we can get him some more opportunity to play as that's the only way the game will start to slow down. But with that said, I had no issues with how Rocco played. I'm happy to see him take what's available, and utilize the TEs.

10-13 with 2 TDs and zero picks is about as good as you can play. He looks more ready than Kohl at the moment. Next Saturday will tell us a lot more.

Not only that he wasn't just able to stand in the pocket and toss balls to wide open receivers either.

UNI got to him several times and he handled the pressure EXTREMELY well. A couple of times he rolled right, one of which he had a well-timed scamper to evade a would be sack, and made some nice throws. I was really impressed with his read progressions and ability to see the field.

Given how the line line played O don't think we could have asked for much more. Maaayyybbbeee connecting on one of the two deep throws but even they were well thrown.

JJ isn't ready and that's fine. Slap on the red shirt and give Rocco the first team reps. He's clearly the guy at this point.

He doesn't have the vision yet. Which is both fine and to be expected.

I don't disagree but I do have concerns... because if you always lose your backups to NIL, then every year you are short on depth.

With NIL the way it is, I just have a hard time seeing both stick around long term whomever wins simply because at maximum there is one year separating their classes. I think in todays world of the transfer portal that's a tough sell at that position.

Personally I don't have a horse in the race but if we're going to try to win ugly, it makes sense to play JJ., Because you are not going to ask him to do much. Now, if you're going to try to be more advanced and ask more of your QB, then Rocco makes sense because in theory at least he's been in the system longer and therefore has a better grasp on things.

Now, based on UNI, I'm 99% certain Rococ plays probably at minimum 90% of the time versus everyone not named Ohio unless we're down big or up big
How many backups have we lost to NIL?

Craig McDonald and Isheem are the only two I can think of. And Craig already transferred from Auburn I believe.

To be fair, that’s what the 49ers said about Trey Lance. Let’s give Rocco a chance here. He looked pretty good in his first start.

It seemed a little odd they interviewed his dad during the telecast... but yeah JJ will take some time but that's totally normal for a freshman. Hopefully it'll be a fun competition in the future but Rocco is definitely the guy for now.
I didn't find it odd at all. He is a somewhat public figure as coach of the XFL's St Louis franchise. And played in the NFL for 11 years. Rocco's story is pretty unique too, he was very lightly recruited despite being a 4-star.
