Has the Rot Started to Set In?

I’ve been around for a few coaches and I’m definitely getting that feeling. McDermott, McCarney, Rhoads, Prohm. Not going to include guys like Morgan, Fred, or Chizik as those were different/very short term situations. Obviously Larry was a unique situation as well.

I’ve had this feeling before and while we’re not totally rotted out (there’s a chance CMC could bounce back a la Kirk Ferentz), I think the “rot” has definitely started to sneak in, if only just a little bit, especially with the gambling issue and it’s direct contradiction to the “5-Star Culture” mantra.

Hard to answer this question so early in the season. I'm going to have to pin it for now, and try to have an answer by your Sept 26th deadline.

I just think there is so much unknown still about this team in particular. It seems like the program is still in late phase 1 or early phase 2 of a rebuild. Campbell's got some goodwill, probably enough to get him thru a potentially rough current season. But if they continue to struggle and struggle again next season, I think we're rotted out.

Check back mid-season and see how we have fared. Than see if we improve in the 2nd half. If we auger in all season long than I'll be pessimistic. Right now I am not particularly optimistic with no Big 12 level receivers and probably another OL that is sub-par. Defense will keep us in games but not win us games.

If we miss a bowl game 2 years in a row I'll definitely be heading in the time to move on direction unless there is just tremendous growth as the season goes along and we looked really good the last few games (idk how this happens without making a bowl). I know we don't have a ton of history but missing a bowl game 2 years in a row for a power conference school in this day and age of bowls is bad. I'm fine with missing one every few years because we are going to be a developmental program but back to back years this far into a coach's tenure would seem real bad for program momentum

JFC. We had a bummer year last season. Win the next three and we’ll be worried about Campbell going to Ohio State again. It’s never as good or as bad as it seems.

This is probably my biggest frustration.
Heacock is putting together all time great defenses with little to nothing to show for it because the offense and special teams can’t carry their own weight.

Agreed. Too early to say but there’s definitely some concern at this point. Need to see improvement throughout the year and a bare minimum of 4-5 wins. If we don’t win at least six next year, move on.

Am I disappointed with the last 18 months? Absolutely.

Do I feel we've lost some critical momentum? Absolutely.

But there is a long ways down from a coaching respectability and belief to get to anything considered "rot". Not to mention, rot implies things are beyond repair. I don't think they are. I think some mindsets need to change - at the top, and I think we need to hit the Portal hard this offseason, but hope isn't lost. We've neglected the WR and OL development for so many years that it's put us in a bit of a hole. We will hopefully see continued progress and development as this season goes along, especially given our youth.

JFC we lose to Iowa by 7 points and have a chance to tie the game and some are going nuclear. I really really hope TJ makes it far this year in the tournament because if we only make a Sweet 16 we may have some of these types of threads pop up.

I think it's way too early to have any discussion like this at this point in the season but if we see little improvement from the offense this year and end up with 4 wins again with another amazing defense and (so far) improved STs I think it's fair to wonder about the future of the program. That being said, unless we only win 1 or 2 games I think Matt is guaranteed to be coach at least through next season so it really doesn't matter

Doesn't Matt Campbell have a lot of firsts? Lol like most of the firsts? I disagree that there won't be fans complaining if TJ doesn't hit their unreal expectations this year.

Matt Campbell made the right moves this offseason and anyone overreacting here wants immediate success following those changes but that's entirely unrealistic and unreasonable. I can guarantee you if we go out and win 6 games this year, these same people complaining at this moment will wonder how the hell we didn't win 8-9 games.

Thing is coaches don't change. What Campbell is doing will either work or not work.
