More environmentally safe batteries with low recycling impact will shift my focus. Until then, I'll just hang on to my jalopy.

Had it for a week today. Absolutely amazing vehicle.
Son has had his for a couple of months. Spent a fair amount of time in the KC "shop" to fix a lot of little things. Nothing major but a PITA.

I drive a BMW iX xDrive50, a fully electric sedan with a 330-380 mile range. I am retired and most of my driving is around town, usually averaging about 8 miles per trip. I have taken it to Door County (1,020 miles round trip) and for shorter, 160-mile round trips in Iowa. Except the Door County trip (and even then in part) I have charged mainly from 110 plug in our HOA garage (where we’re not separately metered and the HOA Board has declined my offer to pay something for our charging.) In DC the Bailey’s Harbor public library offers free level 2 charging curbside. We made a charging stop in Corralville at an Electrify America station, where we can charge for free through a 2-year free charging deal with the BMW. Almost all our mileage in this car through over a year’s ownership has been for free.

My wife drives BMW’s PHEV which has about 85 miles of fully electric range before engaging the gas engine. On a recent trip to Bentonville, Arkansas, we were able to charge for free on a deal our hotel had with a charging station in an adjacent public garage. The trip is a little over 400 miles each way, so we cut about 21% of the highway gas usage for the trip.

Why did you offer to pay something? That sounds strange if it’s already included

We’re doing our first road trip in it this weekend. Minneapolis to Madison for the weekend. I’ll report back how it goes. Gonna charge to 100% before we leave. I’ll prob stop in Tomah at an EA DC charger for 15 mins and end up with 20% at our friends house. He also offered me to plug in at his house for the weekend and that would give me about 100 miles over 2 days.

Just got back from our longest trip in the model Y and it went pretty smooth. Took a long weekend to KC. The wind was blowing 15mph, which surprisingly had little impact (2%). Stopped for a 10 minute charge in Bethany and then a 30 minute charge in Liberty so that we'd have enough juice for the whole weekend. On the way home, we topped of at the hotel overnight for free last night and then we stopped one time in Bethany on the way for about 20 minutes and arrived home at 18%. In Bethany, the Tesla predicted we'd be at 19% when we got home.

Hopefully they keep building more superchargers with nearly every car builder moving to these chargers.

I commend you on being a darn good mechanic, especially if you have a wife and kids.
1 owner, accident free, under 120k miles, not an ugly car type, and a mostly flawless body are my standards.

I said for myself, bought an Odyssey with 100k miles for the wife and kids. Set me back $16k which hurt my frugal brain a little.

My car has had nothing but oil changes and the van has had spark plugs and tires. I voluntarily changed the timing belt right after we bought it. Cars are very reliable until 150k miles if you take care of them, and pretty reliable until 200k. I just have to hope that 1 owner took good care of their vehicle but most people who spend enough to buy new keep up good on the maintenance.

One thing that's hard to get used to is allow the battery to get somewhat low when you're doing long road trips and trust the software. Charging from 20% to 70% is as fast as 70% to 90%.

Normally, we don't go above 80% charge level but on road trips I'll take it to 90% at home before we leave. Certain Teslas have batteries that you're supposed to charge to 100% but they are somewhat rare.

So when you charge over night can you tell it to stop at a certain%?

So I did a “manager’s special” car rental for a trip in a couple weeks. It was $205 for 8 days, so ridiculously cheap.

But the vendor is Thrifty and the car type is an Electric Vehicle.

Anyone know what I'm likely to get? The only part that makes me nervous is there will be about a hundred mile stretch crossing the Everglades from Fort Lauderdale to Fort Myers where there is no infrastructure.

It’s a factor with combustion engines as well, but this will be the first time in a pure EV.

I see a lot of Tesla rentals.

Had an Uber ride in Vegas this summer and dude rents them to drive.

Yes, as well as other charge options. Some places have lower rates at night so you can only charge at certain times. You can also have it prepare for your drive by not using the battery e.g. get it warmed up.

Also, when I put Ikea Kansas city in the nav, it told me which charger to stop at, what percentage I'd be at when I got there, how long to charge, and a few miles before I got to the supercharger, it starts pre conditioning the battery for faster charging.

You'll have options. I just threw in some numbers. This is assuming you'll leave the rental place at 55%. This route allows you to get down to 10%, which I'm not a fan of. I try not to ever let it go below 20% unless I really know the area. This app is called abrp , which is now owned by rivian but it works for all EVs and it's very customizable. People use it for cross country trips.

Here is an example of my making a small change with less risk.
