For all the ******** that goes on in here about Murph and Andy covering CC, did you ever stop to think...maybe they're trying to expand their audience? Maybe they saw the insane growth of interest in women's sports and decided, "Hey, maybe we should be covering the things most people care about." Shoot, add on top of it he's been covering her for almost a decade now, it makes sense to cover CC as much as anything else they do.

No doubt they are and good for them...however I believe once CC is gone, the interest in Women's basketball over in IA City will go back to well below the continued interest ISU has had for a generation now.

Has Murph kicked out Cmac and moved in with Clark yet? The obsession is unreal!
The only thing greater is the obsession on this board. He was the same way with Purdy when he wasat Iowa State
How do they staff it? where would they sell it? I just don’t see logistically how it’s possible in the current setup of the stadium/concourse
Crazy how all but 14 teams have figured these things out.

If it has the opportunity to bring in millions in revenue? Figure it out and make it happen.

This is neither here nor there, but girls basketball participation is plumeting at the high school level in Iowa. Many schools, even some fairly big ones, are struggling to field teams. I find that interesting given the additional interest in women's basketball.

From the DMR today -

The Waukee Northwest girls basketball roster is deep in talent, but very young, according to Powell.
He believes that over half of his varsity squad will be made up of freshmen
.

Waukee Northwest is the 7th largest school in the BEDS rankings (1502 kids in 9-11), and over half of your varsity girl's basketball team is freshman.

Basketball dying is an exact correlation to volleyball blowing up.
Yep. Girl at my high school played club volleyball over the winter as well as basketball as a sophomore. She would go to basketball practice and then twice a week drive over an hour to volleyball practice. Add a couple of basketball games a week, weightlifting in the morning and volleyball tournaments on weekends and it’s nuts. All these sports bleeding into each other is killing high school sports.

I don’t listen to KXNO but wondering if Murphy ever even mentioned in passing the efforts of the leading scorer in ISU women’s basketball history to stick with a WNBA team? Maybe busy saying how brave it was of CC to go golfing.

The high school girls’ game is very different than the college game too. I don’t think they are getting away with CC stuff in high school.

We have seen a drop in almost all sports, boys and girls, at our school. Exception seems to be in one sport where the boys’ team has a really good coach.

i have a niece who attends a 1A school in central iowa and she told me that 7th and 8th grade basketball this year has to combine their games because between the two grades they have 11 kids out.

That depends a lot on what happens to the Iowa program when she leaves.

Same could be said about football.

Club volleyball is absolutely wrecking girls hoops at the high school level.

It sucks because club volleyball season basically runs November to the summer now. I've seen the recruitment process unfold and if you want to et recruited you HAVE to play club volleyball and compete in some of the large national type tournaments. I don't care if you are 1A or 5A, you won't get a sniff just playing the high school season.

I like to drink before games, but I'm not sure I'd buy that much in the stadium if I could. Mostly because I like to use the game to let the booze wear off, and because it would be really expensive.
Exactly why Pollard's stance doesn't bother me; having 4 hours in the stadium+ walking to sober up before getting out of town works well.

Part of this is also "private" travel teams that form and leave kids off to the side starting in like 5th grade. When kids are getting told that they aren't good enough at such a young age it really hurts the kids that could continue to develop but instead they hang it up which hurts future numbers.

His stance bothers me. Just not because I have any desire to buy beer in the stadium.

It bothers me because we're leaving something on the table financially and almost every other school is utilizing this revenue stream. Then he acts like we're children that can't handle it, when our athletic department in general very much low-key plays off and benefits from our fanbase's reputation as party animals.

I’m not sure there is that much add’l interest outside of the media and talking heads on Twitter. It’s not going to sustain. Women’s soccer has a brighter future than women’s BB imo. Obviously VB interest at the actual people level is also a better prospect.

Hoiberg was probably right that social media will be the end of us, but early specialization in youth sports will be an accelerant. The crazy part is that I don’t think anyone really believes it’s good for the kids, either. There’s just too much money on the table for the leagues.

On the flip side, I coaches rec league 1st/2nd grade soccer this year, and EVERY SINGLE PARENT was awesome, and understood that the kids were far more excited about snacks than anything else. So maybe there is hope.
