On Kohl, I think some have an assumption on what he could be instead of what he is. He’s a true freshman who looked a bit shaky when he played. Rocco won the job and did an awesome job.

If Rocco continues to play at the same level and Kohl beats him out, then ISU football will be in a REALLY good place then.

LOL. Well played. Seriously though, I'm not totally sold on Becht yet. It may be due to the OC having training wheels on him most of the year and not being able to see totally what he is capable of. However, there was no question Brock Purdy was the guy after his Freshman year based on his performance. With Becht I get game manager vibes. He has definitely gotten better since game 1 no question. Can't wait to see how much he improves going into spring.
Of the QBs we faced this year, which would you take over Becht?

Becht had a great year and exceeded expectations. My thing is Kohl has the make up of a big time QB .... I don't see practices so I don't know about arm strength, reading defenses and executing play calls..... I wonder if we hit the ceiling with Becht ?

I'd say he's a 1-2 away from a good "lower" job. He might get a lower lower job now but why would you want that? Like, no offense to ULM, but honestly, why? Etc.

As for Heacock... IDK. Sometimes I think his age might make him more apt to try one more time as a HC? Maybe not but maybe at some point he figures he wants one go before heading off into the sunset?

Heacock will be the DC as long as he wants. He makes over a million per year. And it is his defense. Rumors he may retire and enjoy life. Scheelhaase will be wise to stay a couple more before looking to move up. OC at a P5 with several young breakout freshmen players on offense and Ryan Clanton as OL coach. You ride on that potential for success. Become a big name.

The kid at K-State. Howard, too, probably but Avery Johnson, I think? I know Rocco didn't run much but man, that kid looks special. I get why Howard left.

Ewers = - Manning too - but again he didn't play.
Gabriel
Didn't play due to Injury but Daniels at Kansas

So I guess Ewers, Howard and Gabriel of ones who played.
Manning and Johnson of ones who didn't.

So not many. He had a really good year.

So the back up on a team we beat?
Or Howard, the one that threw the temper tantrum on the sidelines as our QB threw all over his team?

Oh wait, you think we can compete for 5* like Ewers? Brilliant Idea.

I bet we are throwing money into NIL right now to get Gabriel into the portal.

And what about RB - I mean Sama had a few good games at end of season but was really non existent much of the season. Probably should go after Gordon at Okie State?

But I get it, Freshman QB that had essentially the same level of season our last Freshman QB had (who just happens to be in the NFL MVP race as a rookie) isn't quite good enough.

Nice, realistic take.

I don't think Rocco is anywhere near his ceiling.

That’s essentially a non-compete clause, which would only exist if they had a contract with the school. Until they’re actually employees with contracts that isn’t going to work.

4 year scholarships versus 1 year renewable scholarships takes care of this. The vast majority of schools give 1 year renewable scholarships.

Would be pretty easy to set the rules so that if you are on a 1 year renewable scholarship, you can enter the transfer portal with no penalties. If you are on a 4 year scholarship, you have to sit out a year if you decide to transfer.

I think you'd still see the vast majority of schools stick to 1 year renewable scholarships, though.

You asked the question: which would you take... as if we could just take them.

My answer would be Ewers and Gabriel. Those are the only ones.

That's a testament to Rocco though, the only guys I'd rather have are blue chip type guys.

I don't either.

But were talking about this year and of the teams we played who'd be a better option for us and thats Gabriel and Ewers for sure.

I could argue Howard and Shapen as well.

For this one year, sure, but I wouldn't trade Rocco for any of them going forward (except maybe Manning due to the pedigree).

Ewers and Gabrial would be immediate proven upgrades. Pedigree means very little to QB play in my opinion. Manning and Kohl in my opinion are on the same level currently.

Blake Shapen is a maybe for me. Will Howard is a no.

I can't believe we're even having this conversation. Becht had a fantastic and successful freshman season, and is absolutely the starting quarterback over Kohl, going into next year, barring something significantly unforseen. It's not a slight again Kohl to say that, either.
