Huh? UCLA has gone to a Final Four and 2 Sweet Sixteens in the past 3 years. They went 27-8 and 31-6 in the seasons during MM’s recruitment. They've been really good Since Mick Cronin was hired.

Also it’s UCLA one of the most stored basketball programs in history. They may have had a rough start to the season but this post is kind of weird.

No doubt. Questioning how ISU is in that discussion is natural.
At this point, much as we love it, ISU is definitely not a better program, and Cronin's track record is a lot better than TJ. There's some real homerific work going on in that guy's post.

I'll make the most generous reading of the post that I can in that coaches and program's reputations can oscillate up and down nowadays far quicker than at any point in the past. Look at Louisville. They were on or at least near a tier with the true blue-blooded programs of the sport (e.g., Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Duke, UNC, etc.) not too long ago. Now they suck. What happened 5+ years ago matters less than ever.

On the flip side, UCLA is having a rough season this year but has not sucked much in recent memory. They've been 71, 18, 10, and 4 on Torvik the past four years and finished with a Final Four, two Sweet Sixteens, and as a (projected) #11 seed in the tournament that we lost to COVID. Even then, I don't see a lot of losses on the schedule for UCLA that you would consider truly dreadful and inexcusable. Their schedule is hard...

Marquette
Gonzaga
Villanova
Ohio State
Cal St. Northridge
Maryland
Oregon

All of those are P6 peers save Gonzaga (who is an obvious special case) and Cal St. Northridge. Even then, they're #175 on Torvik, which is far better than any of the cupcakes the Cyclones have feasted on.

I wonder how we would have done against that slate. It's not like we distinguished ourselves against VT and A&M in Orlando, though we did turn around and piledrive Iowa (bad) and DePaul (worse).

Either way landing Milan was and is a coup.

1. Adjacent state
2. Even with their success and returning guys the past two seasons they have averaged 9k a game.

Those are just the obvious things an outsider should be able to point to.

And Cronin is a little tool.

As I recall, Milan narrowed his choices to UCLA and ISU. After he committed to Iowa State, there were these UCLA guys on a podcast who were just incredulous. It was just beyond their comprehension how that could happen. Typical California, nothing matters outside our state.

Well, fast forward. Milan is starting on a team that is 10-2. Playing for a great coach. With some great teammates. In the far superior conference over PAC12 or over any conference. And who would want to play PAC12 anyway? Name their top teams. Arizona. That's it! And Colorado will likely have a good season because they are playing 10 crappy teams twice. We are the ones who should be incredulous wondering how he even considered the currently 6-6 UCLA.

I took Larry's post as more of a jab at the UCLA podcast guys versus the overall history of the UCLA basketball (with a playful flex in the second paragraph, clearly). If I'd have written that, I'd have doubled down on the homerism and said something like "Arizona is basically a Big XII team and the Pac 12 should stick to swimming and diving."

From many many many busted March Madness brackets, I've learned not to discount the Pac12 teams in March.

For the old-timers out there: does Milan remind anyone of Julius Michalik? Or is it just me?
Totally. His high release and being so tall really does remind me of him. I was going to say that earlier. Mom will probably have a few pounds on Julo during his playing career though. The Hoibergs didn't feed him well enough on Holidays! ha!

I was still a Hawkeye fan back then as a kid/teen but I loved Michalik because it was such a unique novelty back then to see such a tall player be a great shooter in the college game. I found myself cheering for him when he played Iowa, kind of like a Rocky IV moment.
