I've been looking at Highway 30 cameras (permanent and on trucks) between CR and Ames and there is not much if any truly "covered" until you are right around CR, however they suggest it isn't advisable the whole way. Are we talking black ice here or what is the deal and is anyone traveling that road likely to not make it? Or is the drifting going to start soon, I guess I don't know exactly what the problem is. I've driven that stretch of road probably close to 1800 times in the past 26 years and I've seen MUCH worse.
I believe someone said it is a 737 they are chartering. Ames not big enough for that.

As DJ points out, they are flying from OKC to DSM because the airports can handle the type of aircraft used.

The winds and temperatures make for a dangerous situation. That's the main reason travel isn't advised.
If they get to Des Moines I'd bet they get a plow escort.
Ames is a MUCH smaller airport.
I'm guessing the runways in DSM are just fine. I would have my doubts the runway in Ames gets the same treatment to stay open.
Ames runways are significantly shorter and you don't have the space for a 737 to land.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ames isn't as capable of servicing a plane on the ground. DSM I wouldn't be surprised if there's some open hangar space to store the plane while the pilot waits for them to return.

I was out shoveling around 6 pm last night and I gotta say, that's the worst blizzard of my 39 years on this rock.
I was pondering watching the Nebby/EIU game last night what should be added to the metrics home court advantage when the game is played in a blizzard. I'm thinking at least double the normal home court advantage, maybe up to 10 pts. Especially thinking of Purdue/Nebraska and Houston/ISU as samples. Would we have lost by 6 to Houston if it wasn't storming? Very possibly.

Travel was not advised yesterday and we made the DSM to Ames and back trip yesterday afternoon. What is usually a 90 minute round trip took just short of 2 hours. Roads surfaces were never a problem....but visibility going up certainly was. I would say looking outside now......it's much better visibility wise than yesterday so I doubt getting to Ames will be a problem.
