We are going to a meadery this weekend. Anybody have any opinions or recommendations about mead?

I assume that I have to wear armor and carry a sword (I usually do anyway).

Drink enough of it and it will taste good. Even bad beer is good after enough of them ;).

Actually no idea, just know a guy who sold honey to someone who makes mead.

Which one? There use to be a real good one in Marshall county, but it closed. Meads/Ciders kind of lost their luster recently but I like them.

River Hops in Ft. Dodge has a Cider made by the local apple orchard, split a pint of their Oxbow Orange with it and you have a very refreshing drink. The barmaid poured me one the other day it was really fun and different, super light and refreshing.

We have friends up here who keep bees, actually a few friends. One of them had quite a few pounds of honey that was getting old so her husband who does home brewing decided to make mead. He tried it but wasn't a big fan. He gave me a bottle when I was at their place and I liked it so he gave me the last 6 pack.

That is my full sum experience with mead. I will just say that I really liked it.

The real question is has anyone here tried fermented mares milk (kumis) like the Mongols drank(drink)? I wonder how that would taste.

White Bear Meadery (Northeast Twin Cities).

There's a few good cideries around here that make pretty good ciders. I like them as long as they aren't too sweet. One place here has a cider with peppers that is terrific. You can get it either a little spicy or really spicy.

I'm going in to this mead thing with an open mind. They make a lot of different flavored ones so one of us has to like some of it.

The fermented mares milk frightens me. I'm not nearly tough enough to survive on the steppes of Mongolia. I would love to have a Yurt in my backyard though.

Funny story of me and my moron friends. One night we had a bad/basic beer tasting contest. The beers were Bud Light, Busch Light, etc. You basically had to guess what the beers were after...tasting them. Can't remember if we even had an award.

Well we got together beforehand and had a few so we were already kind of buzzed, so they all pretty much tasted the same since they kind of do anyway.

One friend rigged it by somehow knowing which brand was warm so he was able to be accurate enough to win.

Many years ago when young and dumb a friend and I were in the back of the car with the cooler kept passing last wks beers to the front and keeping the fresh ones for ourselves. They didn't catch on for the longest time.

This post does not condone road tripping it was a different era.

Ottumwa at #4 Cedar Falls for the Boys Sub-State semis. Cedar Falls has two kids 6'8", two 6'6", and I think their shortest starter is 6'3" or 6'4". Ottumwa's tallest kid is 6'5".

It's....not pretty. And there was still over 4:00 to go in the first half.

That's amazing that Ottumwa can overcome that kind of height differential and dominate like that.

Went bird walkabout from the resort towards dusk and saw my first spider monkey. Little **** dropped out of the trees so close to me I couldn't even get all of him in the viewfinder. Had TOO much lens on the camera. Was pretty cool though. I've never spied a spider or howler here.
