Got to be honest here fellow Cyclone fans.

I really, really like Jess Settles; not quite as much as Fran, but he's now a close second for me. He clearly knows the game well and knows what to look for that non-experts like me miss. He's not afraid to be critical of players without being a complete d!ck about it. And perhaps most importantly he's not afraid to call out p!ss-poor officiating, like he did at least a couple of times tonight.

Plus (and I know he was a Hawkeye for 9 years or so) he just seems like a really solid dude; someone you could definitely have an adult beverage or two with on the front porch on a nice spring day. I hope he keeps on calling our games and I would be just fine with him replacing Larry Morgan during the ESPN+ games in the non-conference schedule.
I got flamed for saying this a few games ago. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks he's doing a solid job with commentary.

I had no clue that Settles and Kittle were related, but it really makes sense. Easily two of my favorite Hawks.
Grew up in a house divided. My dad is a big Hawkeye fan. Settles was by far my favorite Hawkeye as a kid. Probably because he’s from a farm made him even more relatable

He's grown on me and I like his appreciation for Hilton. He picks apart the game a lot more than the typical schmucks that would rather obsess about the ACC or whatever.

Also like how he gives himself guf about playing so many years.

Yeah, I could see him rising in the profession because I agree with all the things you said.

My favorite quip of Settles was, while doing a game in Hilton a while back, "I'm sort of a legend in this building." :D
And he does all without any mention of those GDF Sukeyes. He’s become a fan of TJ and this program, he knows good solid BB when he sees it and appreciates the hard work our guys give. Kinda like he played.
Plus….. he knows he’ll NEVER see that kind of effort or fan support and enthusiasm in carver suckhole arena

We know he has the ability to stick around, so he probably will be at ESPN for a long time.

I didn't realize that he was the head coach at Iowa Wesleyan for 2 years.
It seemed like he was there forever, but one year he only played 3 games and then set out the next season before coming back for his 6th season. He used his pre covid year.

He’s done a good job. It’s a little weird that we’ve had him like 4 straight games but I’m not gonna complain about anyone who isn’t Chris Spatola.
He does a nice job. He gives Cyclone fans a bit of a homer attitude, but stays pretty neutral overall.

My guess is Jess is the designated home Cyclone announcer for ESPN games that Fran doesn't announce. It doesn't surprise me in the modern TV era. ESPN is very cost focused so having Jess drive up from from SE Iowa is a lot cheaper than putting King McClure on a plane.

you dont like your announcers 'getting wet' and flexing their R&B chops on air?
