I'm embarrassed that no one in the student section didn't have a blow-up picture of this.
Student sign game was sad this yr. IMO.

I don’t think relying on who was “better” by fans is a good metric. Way too many biases like the era they played. Accolades are a way better way to evaluate players.Stevens was a better player then Ejim. Didn't look the stats up but Barry was way more electric.

All conference accolades need to also consider that the conference has had 8, 10, 12 and 14 teams. It’s way harder to get all conference accolades in a 12 or 14 team league than an 8 team league.
Right? Fizer and Tinsley aren’t up there, but they damn well should be. But let’s say Tinsley left when Fizer did, so one of them wouldn’t have been the “best” player ever on the team. Morris and Niang same thing, as one of them couldn’t be the best player on the team if they were both on the team. What the hell kind criteria is only the best player on his team his final year?
People just coming at it from different places is all. What the standard "should" be will vary a bunch across any group of people. But I don't think there is anybody anti-Ejim, that would be dumb. This thread is weird. It feels like there is a group that is either A) Anti-Melvin for whatever stupid reason OR B) Nobody can have their jersey in the rafters until we get Fizer and Tinsley in there.
I hope it’s not A and only B. To which I say, ok sure, but just because the criteria is stupid and those two aren’t up there doesn’t mean we have to avoid others deserving of being up there. Fizer and Tinsley should be there, we all agree. But Ejim has absolutely earned a spot up there.
I don't know what the person you responded to was getting at (if they think that Ejim shouldn't go up there, I disagree). But I don't think the bolded quote is the correct framing. When all is said and done, I'd bet that 2000-2019 will have three players up there (Ejim, Niang, and Morris) vs. the four from 1980-1999. It would probably be five from that era if not for the Iowa State graduate rule, which is fair to argue about. Was ‘80 to ‘99 four times better than ‘00 to ‘19?
The retired jersey’s aren’t all our best players, that’s why it’s a hot button issue.
Stevens and Grayer are right up there with Fizer and Tinsley as our best players ever (IMO).Stevens was a better player then Ejim. Didn't look the stats up but Barry was way more electric.

I’m not saying that, I just don’t like the Ejim wasn’t as good as Stevens, Fred, Hornacek…” argument. He has more accolades than those guys in a bigger conference that was the best in the country.Well hell lets take down any one in the rafters after 40 yrs that's the only way to keep things current.![]()
There is a timing component, and Ejim is older than Niang, so Ejim will get it first assuming both happen as soon as they are able. The next jersey in the rafters has to be Niang.
After Niang, then you can hang Ejim. Melvin was a roll player until his POTY senior season. Niang was the key piece to 3.3/4 of the years he played.
Melvin is an elite Cyclone, don't get me wrong, but he isn't a first ballot rafters candidate like Niang.
