They invited these guys into their program and within 12 months have asked them to leave. By definition you have either an evaluation or development problem.
I disagree. This was maybe true in the pre-NIL era but times have changed. These kids are leaving because they want to and are likely getting money. All above board now with NIL but the days of "developing" a team are just gone. It sucks and I hate it, but you just reload with transfers. It's starters and bench warmers hitting the portal from all the teams.

The trick now for coaches is evaluating talent and getting a completely refreshed team to gel and make a tourney run.

Fizer was good enough to play/start as a freshman but by no means a polished star. Our sample size of top twenty hs recruits is basically 2.
If ISU program was in a different position Omaha sees the floor and we rise and fall with what he could give us. We had deep sr depth in the post (King Ward BRE) and a bonafide scorer at the 3 and a more seasoned less ceiling version of himself at the stretch 3-4 (Watson)

It’s a problem of riches he wasn’t thrust into the starting lineup and likely his own development he didn’t get ahead of Watson.

It happens.

I think you’re overestimating how many people enter the transfer portal for basketball each year that are getting NIL. This board in general really overstates NIL and it’s become this catchall boogie man for anything negitive. Because he is a 5 star a lower tier P5 program might take a flyer on him but most of the guys who transfer from the P5 drop down. Unless they are a star who don’t have great NBA prospects like Dickerson the good players don’t move that much.

Edit* Sparty was in the same position with our class and the fans are all stunned we didn’t lose anyone.

Not sarcasm. I hope he goes somewhere, is used properly and lights it up. Then all the naysayers can eat crow.
Oh. I read it like TJ and staff misused him on purpose and you want Omaha to stick it to them.

Guess I’m still confused. :D

It's all about the Benjamins. The schools with deep pockets can just buy championships. Which defeats the purpose.

Kind of like going hunting but you tie an animal to a tree and you send a trophy hunter out to kill it just to say he killed it.

The same goes for championships sure you won multiple championships but only because you could afford to outspend everyone else. You didn't win it you bought it.
Very true, and the folks who have the most of it, the current P2 conference members, and the media outlets who are funding them, see no reason to change. Yet. and I'm afraid the first round of changes, if any come, will be even more to their advantage, not less.

I long for the day where there will be either cap limits on NIL, and or a system where the athletes can become/or must become, employees of the schools and colleges, again with certain wage cap limits. Take the burden off the fans and create more equity.

I'm afraid the cat is out of the bag now though, and change in this regard would be akin to asking congress to pass term limits, or measures against lobbyists, etc. Why would that happen when the people benefiting from it would lose out if those reforms were enacted?

Yep the final four is just full of all that media money UConn gets and we all know NC State is just rolling in dough. I mean look at all those transfers Purdue has! How can anyone possibly compete!

I think we have benefited more from the current portal/NIL rules than most teams. The year before it we were 2-22, in the three years since we have won 22, 19, and 29 games, gone to the tourney all three years including two Sweet 16, just had one of the best years in the history of the program, and are well positioned for another great year next year because we have a bunch of players who are already good and aren't leaving. I'll take this system over one focused on high school recruitment any day of the week.

Personally I like having a bunch of new players every year, keeps things interesting!

Homan put up a month worth of BRE points in one game v. UNC.
That was anomaly not his norm. It is hard for non stretch 5 to shoot 43%. Homan was a tough rebounder and good defensive player but he was very limited offensively. Yes, he averaged 13 points/game but took 12 shots/game to do it.

I’m glad you get that, the last two sweet 16 runs were built on transfers. Wild that people bemoan the very system that allowed such a fast rebuild with tourny results

I wish at some point we can just put 2-22 behind us. With a normal schedule they would of won 7 or 8 games. Prohm still would of got canned but it deserves an *.

I think the bemoaning is just because we hardly ever get recruits rated this high, there’s been maybe one or two others on that level in the history of the program. But I also think high school ratings are pretty irrelevant after they show up and are a non-factor for a year.

* nothing against Omaha, I hope he has success somewhere else, but we were fine this year without him being a factor and will be fine next year without him again.

They were real bad and without a rudder. Finding ways to lose. And leaking talent.

Just because ISU benefitted doesn’t change that the system has ruined what college athletics had been. When the pro sports have more restrictions on transfers and salaries, it’s a problem IMO.

What the system is doing is penalizing the coaching staffs that can identify and develop talent by having that talent leave for better funded programs.

My guess is Omaha saw the writing on the wall. maybe he couldn’t play defense. He might get some money, but wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t that much.

How exactly are college sports ruined right now? Also when coaches identify and develop those kids they tend to stay unless they are in a lower tier conference. Most players don’t risk it moving to a new situation with a new staff and teammates they don’t know if everything is clicking.

Still were 2-0 v. the SWAC. Where does that get us in a normal season? This season?

The mid- and low-majors are hating life right now. We’ve got it pretty good if you ask me.
