I know it was highly regarded but watching Ross lead a platoon just doesn't give me interest for Band of Bros.

They get rid of him fairly quickly and basically make fun of him the whole time. I was the same way though.

Larry David's idea in Curb for a sitcom about an actor who is annoyingly known for life as one successful character is actually a good idea. "Ross" might have even been and even better example than "Costanza" or "Elaine". Ironically he did get "Ross" an entire season's worth of work in Curb.

God forbid if we ever get into another situation like this I worry what the US will be

Ukraine. If Russia wins, possible it will move to recover other countries it once held, such as the Balkans, Poland, NATO members all. Putin is an evil creature.

I added to my OP, the Omaha Beach scene from Saving Private Ryan. Brutal, just awful.

Also, a link to the 1964 news report with Walter Cronkite, he and General Eisenhower walk the beaches, tell the story of the long preparation for the invasion. Actual places and sites of the time.

IMHO, the final scene with Eisenhower sitting on a wall of the American Cemetary at Normandy, talking about what happened then and his hopes for the future, is moving.

Following is the Order of Battle, all the units that fought in and around Normandy.

Also added to the OP a CNN Amanpour interview with Tom Hanks. An outstanding piece.
