If one drives a PHEV with the electric drive 80% of the time would not any tire wear increase effectively be the same as an EV?

Asking because I just sold my PHEV at 46K miles and the original tires were just to the point of needing to be replaced. The service tech told me they'd wear down fast when I first got it but I was surprised they seemed to last a lot of miles. I drive pretty conservatively, maybe that helps.
I bought my first and only brand new vehicle when Ford was in the middle of their tire problems with Firestone a little over 20 years ago. So they had put Michelin tires on that Explorer. I did put on a lot of highway miles but I am not a conservative driver by any stretch of the imagination. However, I got 90k miles out of those tires. I was absolutely shocked and it made a Michelin disciple out of me. I have never gotten 90k miles since, but I have never been sorry for springing for the frog tires.

Currently, people driving all electric vehicles are using our roads and bridges for free. That simply isn't fair. I know I've opened myself up to all kinds of comments about saving the planet, but we also have to save our roads as well unless we decide to establish a toll on all local, state and federal roads. If you have a plan for this that will pass the legislative process, please let me know.

I've just been appointed to a commission to study this. I'm listening.

Not in Iowa.

Wow. I was surprised they were telling me I'd only get 30k early on and I got 45K+

It would be crazy to see what a car might look like if it was purposefully designed to have low maintenance costs. Probably really boring and look the same for decades but I bet it could get really low and the average joe could fix most things themselves.

Discount Tire gives mileage estimates, with the Model Y most tires last about 35k miles. With the Telluride it's between 60-75K. The Model Y has the performance of a sports car, and 35k miles is pretty typical in that world.

There is a difference between a low profile car tire and a light truck/SUV tire.

The mass of the vehicle is only part of the tire wear equation.

I’m sure, but the idea that EV’s are just way heavier than ICE vehicles is completely false. Most are very comparable.

I compared a model Y and a Telluride because they both seat 7.

Telluride is 3" wider, 5" taller, and a foot longer. Probably not the best direct comparison.

  1. Lexus RX 350: Curb weight around 4,300 to 4,500 lbs (depending on options)
  2. BMW X3: Curb weight around 4,000 to 4,200 lbs (depending on options)
  3. Acura RDX: Curb weight around 3,800 to 4,000 lbs (depending on options)
  4. Volvo XC60: Curb weight around 4,200 to 4,400 lbs (depending on options)
  5. Land Rover Range Rover Evoque: Curb weight around 4,000 to 4,200 lbs (depending on options)
Note: These are approximate curb weights and can vary depending on the specific model year, trim level, and options equipped. You can find the exact weight of a particular vehicle by checking the owner's manual or manufacturer's website.

Since the Tesla Model Y is an electric car, there aren't direct competitors in terms of powertrain, but here are 5 gas-powered SUVs that are similar in size:

I want to know more about this commision. The Iowa DOT along with every other DOT in the country has been researching this issue for years. They've discussed things like putting mileage trackers in cars, taxing public electric, taxing at POS, registration fees, etc.

Well, case in point it's extremely close.

They settled on charging us double what I used to pay in gas tax a year. I guess we have to try and prop up stupid ethanol more and penalize people that don't use it.
