Florida State and Clemson would be great additions to the conference. I could see the University of Miami and San Diego State additions and the Big 12 would be coast-to-coast.

Ehh. I don't want to be an a-hole but if the B12 has UCF and FSU does Miami really do anything? And SDSU? Meh.

From what I’ve read the Clemson/FSU talks to the Big 12 are serious. The rights to corporate entities that will bring major money to the Big 12 and the ability to send extra money to Clemson/FSU to pay off the ACC is key. If the Commissioner pulls this off it negates the loss of UT & OU. Adding SD St does nothing but Miami would be a winner.

I don't really want either of them. Florida State would be a cool brand to have, but that would be the only ACC team to really excite me. Sure it would be cool to have Duke and UNC for basketball, but ultimately they would never feel very natural to me, kind of how I struggle to grasp it feeling very natural to play Arizona or Arizona State here in the nearer future. This conference stuff is getting way too out of control if it wasn't already.

If the B12 has UCF and FSU what having Miami adds is a stronghold on the fertil recruiting ground of Florida. Much like they have with Texas. The two biggest brands in Texas may be in the SEC but the volume of Texas schools in the B12 gives you a selling point that an athlete as a Texas native going to school at WVU will be back closer to home more frequently. Just like you could say to kids from Florida with three Florida schools.

Agreed on SDSU. This does nothing for me. If the goal is to truly be coast to coast then I would be more interested in Washington State than SDSU. But really nothing left on the west coast is all that exciting.

Didn't listen (yet). Is there any Notre Dame talk at the same time? Their tie to the ACC is almost completely on their terms and to their benefit. If the ACC loses their top 2 FB teams does that make ND go... "Hmmmm?"

Not at all thinking they would come to the Big XII, just wondering about how it would play in South Bend.

I haven't listened yet but until I do and maybe change my mind, I still say no way FSU and Clemson happens. I remember getting mildly hopeful in 2013 about them joining the Big 12 with the rumors. But then it became a big nothing.

No chance Notre Dame comes to the Big 12..... unless a boatload of TV money comes with them. We're talking over $100 million per.

One thing they were hitting repeatedly in the show was that we shouldn't take FSU or Clemson if it causes the Big 12 payout to decrease. I think that's a given - I would hope that no one among the powers that be are considering that as an option. It is true that money doesn't appear from nowhere though. We know that ESPN and Fox are tapped out. I also don't think it's a good assumption that the streaming video crew would pay a higher rate vs the traditional media. They aren't idiots - they can see that ESPN and Fox can barely afford things as it is. They'll pay market price, or lower and let the traditional media bankrupt themselves. No need to spend big on a product that doesn't have an insanely massive market. That's what we've seen so far - get the MLS on the cheap because it's good value or pay up for the NFL because it's worth it.

My assumption (which I think any fan on the outside looking in should be assuming) is that this deal happens only if there is enough money in the deal for the B12 teams to stay even or increase their media payout. How does that happen? I don't know but I could think of a number of ways:

1) A new media partner buys rights and adds funding. That does get tricky is how that works - would ESPN transfer their $X they pay for the two schools from the ACC to the B12 with the new partner only making up the difference, or would the new partner need to pay the price of two "full shares" for the two teams to come to the B12
2) ESPN utilizes the FSU/Clem departure to renegotiate their ACC deal to an even lower rate, freeing up money to pay FSU/Clem on par with the B12 while the rest of the ACC takes a haircut. They could still come out money ahead doing this.
3) Corporate sponsors somehow fund the gap in pay for the remainder of this media deal to keep everyone even.

I read a tweet a few weeks ago that the Big 12 was closer to get Washington and Oregon than you’d think. This reminds me of that. My guess is espn makes the Big 10/SEC take Clemson and Florida State. Then we’ll get the leftovers.

That could be. Who’s the Colorado in this case that blinks and moves first before the ship sinks? My bet is Louisville

Is it bad I'm okay with this? Add Syracuse, Duke, Louisville and one or more NC State, Virginia Tech or Miami.
Best college basketball conference in the country.

I don’t know. They’re one of the more realistic options. Decent football and basketball. Geographically favorable for Cincy and WVU. Likely not academic enough for the B1G. Doesn’t give the SEC anything that UK already does.

Yeah, but do they increase our money? I sort of doubt it.

Until someone can prove that they can breakout basketball and get a significant payday from it, this is only good as a headline. Football still drives the bus and is the money maker.

I agree. I know Papa John’s was the cash cow there, but the main guy was in hot water a few years ago. Not sure if he’s still involved.

It’s a weird feeling that XII can (has to) be choosy about additions now given the $22M threshold.
