Whose rankings are they using? Rivals, On3, 247, and ESPN all have different star rankings for current players
Not sure….i took a glance at 247 and we should have a few more 4 stars than listed.

247 has Tyler Moore, Jacob Imming, JJ Kohl, and Marcus Neal all as 4 stars, still on the roster. Rivals has Kohl, Becht, and Dom Orange.

On3 has Overby, Neal, Kohl, Same, Trevon Howard, Ezeogu, Moore, Noel, and Verdon as 4 stars. ESPN shows Parkes.

Iowa State

Four years ago, the Cyclones finished No. 9 in the country, going 9-3. They stumbled the next couple of seasons but found their stride again despite being extremely young in some key places in 2023. Now, they’re a more seasoned bunch with nine starters back on both sides of the ball, led by sophomore QB Rocco Becht, who Matt Campbell raves about from a talent standpoint and in terms of his makeup. Becht led Iowa State to wins last year at Kansas State and against Oklahoma State, throwing a combined six TDs and zero picks. Sophomore Abu Sama III is an explosive running back while rangy Jayden Higgins, a preseason All-Big 12 pick, leads a deep group of wideouts. Tight end Benjamin Brahmer is another promising young talent coming off an impressive true freshman season.

The Cyclones are salty on defense, led by the safety tandem of Beau Freyler (107 tackles, three INTs in 2023) and Jeremiah Cooper (five INTs). There are a lot of other really solid players back from what was the nation’s No. 7 red zone defense. Domonique Orange, a 6-4, 325-pound D-lineman who benches 450 pounds and has a vertical jump of 34 inches, has the potential to be a dominant force up front. Going to Iowa City to face the Hawkeyes is a big challenge. Just like going to West Virginia, Utah and Kansas.

25. Iowa State Cyclones / P4 / Big 12

When Matt Campbell is done in Ames, Iowa, I expect to hear about a statue of him being built in front of Jack Trice Stadium. In seven years, he produced a unanimous All-American in Breece Hall, won the program's first major bowl game and has quadrupled the number of eight-win seasons the program had from 1979 to 2016.

This year Campbell's got 19 starters back, including quarterback Rocco Becht, who passed for 3,120 yards with 23 TDs and eight INTs, and wideout Jayden Higgins, who ranked second in the league in receiving yards with 983 on 53 catches.

Defensively, Jeremiah Cooper is the most underrated safety in the sport, finishing last season with five interceptions, 15 passes defended and 10 pass breakup. Good luck with that, Big 12.

Iowa State Win Total Odds: Over 7.5 (-120) Under 7.5 (+100)

This is what has me feeling defeated about the new playoff. Almost all preseason podcasts, local and national, have mentioned Iowa being a near lock for the playoffs if they go 10-2 and no CCG. In the same breath they say the Big 12 will be lucky to get 2 teams in.

A big 10 team with a tough schedule should get an at large at 10-2 but the schedule has to matter. If Iowa ends up with a SoS in the 50’s and still gets an at large at 10-2 but a 10-2 Big 12 team is left out but has a better SOS than Iowa because “P2” then just say the regular doesn’t matter. Only the conference logo on the jerseys matter.

I know it’s going to happen but im hopeful some logic will prevail.

I find it interesting. (basically it means they see it as a tossup) that the registers Iowa writer picks Iowa State to win the interstate game while the Iowa State writer picks Iowa.

If blowhards have you feeling “defeated”, you should probably stop listening to them.

They don’t know anything more than the rest of us. They have their talking points, and are just trying to improve their ratings points.

I am more negative, I know the preseason hype train is on but let's be real. a 10-win season just isn't gonna happen. No one is talking about the offensive coordinator change and the fact that O-line coach hasn't proven anything here yet. Obviously I like our skill position players on both sides of the ball but there's weaknesses, especially at linebacker imo. I think our floor is a bit higher, maybe 6-6, but with a ceiling at 9-3. Optimistically I think we only get 1 outta 3 of the KU, KSU, and Utah games

Iowa, like KU, has a putz schedule and could easily go 10-2 and make the playoff where they will be vanquished.
