Papa's Corner is now under new ownership. The name will likely change, but hopefully their new line-up for Thursday nights does not. I was liking all the bands they brought in, I spent a bit of time there. Glad to see those owners go, cause I could tell they had big problems with mis-management, sad to see the shows go though.

Papa's Corner is not under new ownership.

Is that supposed to be "now under new ownership"? Just clarifying, because it changes the meaning of the entire sentence. From the rest of the post I'd guess that's a typo.

I also wish they had just left People's alone.

People's should be salivating at the shot to get back into that location. I'm so glad to see those ******** fail. Why couldn't they just have left People's alone? Call me vindictive, but it was absolutely idiotic to kick out A LANDMARK, a bar that had been featured in Playboy multiple times, the longest running bar in Campustown and an absolute Ames icon, because you think you can do a better job. Really? Really?

I proposed to my wife at People's during a Hello Dave show so I was pretty mad when I heard they packed up for Des Moines. That place was great and had so many good bands in there.

They were in Des Moines before getting the boot in Ames. The plan was to have 2 People's, and then the ******** who owned the building in Ames, decided not to renew the lease so they could start their own bar, as they thought they could do it better. They made it about a year. Well done, jerk offs.

I opened this thread expecting to see HB committed to us, Cyclonefanatic actually banned any talk of ISU leaving the Big XII, the football team would have names on their Jersey's next year or at the very least, some boobies.

People's ....... the longest running bar in Campustown .....

??? I do believe that as far back as 1976 Cy's Roost was alive and well in Campustown and the People's location was still a bookstore. Yes, I understand that Cy's was shut for a short time while serving a suspension a few years ago. IMO, Cy's has a more than legitimate claim to the "longest running bar" title.

Please understand - I don't have a dog in the People's vs. Papa's fight. My only interest is in being pro live music and cold beer. And not completely rewriting history.

In my opinion our Campustown isn't great in general right now and has a lot more potential.

People's was a dump that went out of business because the owner/proprietor couldn't keep his **** together. Anyone who thinks otherwise is clueless.

The new place was about half a million over budget because of the state of the building structure and the general lack of actual planning that went into the project. It isn't surprising if it is actually going to be sold or new management is brought in. They really blew some opportunities when they still had time to make it work.

Hopefully someone or someones can come in and turn it around.

I don't know that I totally agree with that. IMO People's was a dump because the building owner had no interest in investing in rennovation. And the business owner didn't because his lease was going to be up and the uncertainty of it being renewed. Even though the place was run down, it was STILL the best bar in Ames. Zmolek seems to be doing OK in DM, so I don't know that he is totally clueless about running a bar.

It seems to me that there should be some decent places available if People's really wants to be back in Ames. The old Varsity Theatre would make an awesome bar. Or, if that 5 story building goes up across from Subway, there is going to be commercial space on the ground floor. I hope that it happens because Campustown has really went downhill in the last 5 years.

Campustown needs more bars. And they should make that section of Welch from LW to the clock thing a pedestrian only area. For the most part the new bars suck. Capone's is ok I guess. I miss Es Tas's old location.
