I'd say either statement to some press folks has about the same effect: nothing to do with the day to day.
I’m not the press. I found it insulting. Also, it was during the postgame on radio. No press.

I actually think the last two opening games (UNI and SEMO) were much better than the previous 5 of Campbell’s before that (excluding the SDSU game that got canceled)

This one wasn’t pretty but was atypical from his early years. We only had 7 real possessions and scored TDs on 3 of them. If the O got the average 12 possessions a game they would probably have scored another 2 TDs. UND had 15 more minutes than us of possession.

We also threw 26 passes to 22 rushes. And going into the 4th quarter we had 21 passes to 11 rushes. I feel like we were way more aggressive this year’s opening game than year’s past.

The problem this year was the D absolutely could not get off the field. UND had a very methodical game plan and executed it well. But it still was alarming how poorly the D did stopping 3rd down conversions. I was happy with the secondary, but the LBs reallly struggled stopping the run and covering the short routes to that UND possession receiver.

I guess I don’t understand the freak out happening here today. The game was never in doubt after the first 2 plays. Defense has things to shore up, sure, but they bent and didn’t break. We need to get healthy and LB’s need to get better fast.

Offense was barely on the field. They didn’t even pay a half of football. Liked the game plan and play calling. Loved the passing attack.

We don’t recruit to the level where we can just show up and dominate teams. We just don’t. The same people complaining about not dominating and winning by 40 are the ones saying recruiting rankings don’t matter. It does. We had 4 walk ons playing at one point today on defense. That’s concerning.

All in all, I still like this team going forward. This offense is lethal.

Go clones.

I still stand on the idea that the offense drops 35-40 today if the defense did a better job getting off the field.

Can someone please list LB's out and why. I realize Bacon is out.
Mclaughlin had surgery about two weeks ago. That is all I know. Sorry to tease but that is all I know it came from a reputable souce last Sunday, we were asked to pray for healing from surgery.

The ISU defense part of the game was hard to watch.
I think we are in big big trouble on defense this year.
I have bad thoughts about the Iowa game....
Yep. ND had the ball for 38 minutes to only 22 for ISU. The way ND was able to control the ball limited the number of offensive possessions in the game. ISU had only 7 possessions during the entire game (not counting the kneel down at the end of the game). There's a lot of teams that will have 7 possessions in one half.

Was the game satisfying? About the same as warm, curdling milk.

That said, this is ISU football in September for the entirety of CMC's 9 years here. Anyone who convinced themselves 40+ was going to be hung on UND hasn't been paying attention.

It's gross, especially when you see every other team playing an FCS team putting up those numbers, but at the end of the day it's a W. And no - UND was never really in this game, no matter what the scoreboard nor the stat sheets said. For all the time possessed and yards gained, they only sniffed the goal line twice and got a grand total of 3 points out of it.
My son isn't much into sports, but he's a good sport and watches games with us. He asked me about all the blowout scores, so I explained the pre-con schedule to him.

Him: So the small schools get paid to be cannon fodder?

Me: Yup...

Him: It would be funny if a small school would win.

Me: No, no it isn't...

Do re mi, mi, mi!

I fell for it, my prediction 45 - 13. It's all @Aclone 's fault.

Predictions are fun though, but I should have known. We rarely blow teams out, especially game one.

On to the Herkeye's, 48 - 7 Cyclones!

Nice post. For context: Iowa had 5 possessions in the first 18 minutes of gameplay.

It was easy to see UND’s entire strategy was to limited possession to control the ball.

Why would they when they could run at will?

Because hardly any runs were big gains so you have to be pretty much mistake free, it’s why they hardly scored a point despite dominating possession. We gave them something and they were happy to try for nothing more.

Campbell was clearly screwing around with a lot of personnel groupings that second half. He was not animated at all and was more stoic than he sometimes can be. I think the most excited I saw him was when porter made that hell of a play on that punt.

Perspective is important.

Michigan 16 - Fresno St 10 in the 4th
Oregon 17 - Idaho 7 in the 4th

Well, Michigan isn't what they were last year (no matter how many people try to sell that they are), and at least historically Fresno has been able to play football. But still - the fact this is still a game is a surprise.

The o-line got no push. The d-line got pushed back-- quite a lot. The LB were nowhere near good enough to make up for the d-line.

The defense needs to take 2 steps forward real fast, or its gonna be a rough year.

Offense will be explosive but inconsistent if the o-line doesnt get better.

I think theyll be fine but Dallas seems off the table.
