Yes, it was 3 on paper, but it should’ve been a lot more. We had a missed FG, and several drives that stalled out and one interception fairly deep in our territory.

Our D did a good job of keeping them out of the end zone, but their lack of scoring was more their lack of execution than us stopping them consistently.

Our D must improve quite a bit by next week if we are to have any chance in Iowa City.
The D wasn’t great. But UIs offense won’t be that much better

May have been mentioned already, but why was Ben Brahmer a complete non factor yesterday? I thought he was going to be a huge part of this offense.

I was only able to listen to the game, and only about half of it. I did record it though, so will need to watch it.

With that being said, at one point in the 1st half, John and Eric actually commented about ND’s OL pushing our DL 6 yds backwards. It was after a 1st down run of 8yds by them if I’m remembering correctly.

That really was really telling. They started that one drive on their own 3 yd line and held the ball for nearly a whole quarter.

Next week will not be pretty at all if we play like that. UND’s OL is supposed to be garbage too.

I don't think our D-line was getting blown up that badly. it's a little hard to tell watching in the stadium, but it just seemed to me like our linebackers were completely lost in the run game. if we are running a 3-man front, it's their job to just try and eat some blocks and the LBs have to fill the gaps. the LBs did not fill the gaps consistently today.
But if the DL is getting pushed back several yards, you can’t blame the LB’s

I thought Rocco was really good yesterday. He had a couple passes that saved on the left side line, but I'm not sure if Greene ran his route deep enough. He definitely had a route later in the game he ran too passively.

Sama looked good before he went out. Not sure what his injury was but he was on the sidelines with his helmet on for the rest of the game, so I'm going to assume he will be fine.

I suspect we will see a lot of 4 man front next week with the lber situation.

ISU - 7.35 yards per play
ND - 4.09 yards per play

FWIW. I think CMC would think that is too many yards to be giving up, but ND did a good job of consistently taking what was available against a very vanilla defensive front.

I remember Rocco targeting him twice if I remember correctly. The one pass I do remember, the throw was a little high and outside but Brahmer couldn’t bring it in. Would’ve been a tough catch to make.

Overall we got a win and move on to the EIU game next week. Defense was solid, not dominate like you would have liked playing a team of this caliber. Rocco and the WR core looked great, still not sold that Sama is going to be a great RB for ISU. Take away his one game against KSU and he looks completely average the rest of his games. Oline really struggled to open a hole which is disappointing with a 2nd year coach and the players we have coming back. Defense just could not get off the field, losing Bacon early did not help that, but with as many returning players as ISU had, I had hoped we would be more plug and play this season.

Every team is the greatest improvement from week one to week two, we are going to need it to beat EIU at their place on Saturday.

Sama has had several explosive runs including a big game at BYU last year.

He needs space like anyone else.

There wasn't much room yesterday and ISU was passing more in their limited possessions anyway.

That 147 play drive was just painful to watch. They must have converted 7 3rd downs on that 1 drive. A couple of them had some pretty generous spots too.

Why they didn't man up on number 1 for und is beyond me.

You can’t seriously say the D was weak when they gave up 3 points. Idk about you, but I’ve seen isu teams give up much more than 3 and still go on to have a good year. I think some of us need to relax a bit.

Yeah, they shouldn’t have bent as much as they did, but football is about scoring more points than the other team and we’ll be alright if we allow 3
The 3rd down conversions vs the D was concerning.

Normally you give up that kind of 3rd down efficiency to your opponent it ends in a loss.
At one time ND had 11 of 15 on conversions.
So it was ugly.

But ISU has often been bend until the opponent gets into or near red zone and then shuts them down.

There were some bad gap fills and angles taken on several running plays, that should be correctable.

Iowa State will not be able to run the ball against Iowa at all if they can't even do it against an FCS opponent. That is the frustration with that game. This team isn't dog doo doo or anything like that, but hard to get excited by that performance.
This team will still manage 7-8 wins, but not the 9-10 some here are hoping. Time and time again it’s the same deficiencies the past 8 years. At this point it is what it is and that’s not going to change. Could be a lot worse I guess.

I expected a lot more especially after we drove 75 yards in 28 seconds, but the defense played total bend but don’t break and North Dakota was content to play along even though it meant zero chance of winning without us making huge mistakes.

Did they ever call more than the base D play? I’m not going to get stressed about this as I don’t think the coaches put a lot into the defensive game plan. I’d expect to see a lot more blitzing next week to stop the run. If we see the same performance and a failure to adjust, I’ll get worried then.

This just seemed like a standard Campbell opening game effort. Only show what’s absolutely necessary to win the game. After that first offensive TD, it was a pack it up and move to next week attitude.
