Iowa State can't be afraid to run with Rocco or even make it look like Rocco is running on some pass plays (rollouts, RPOs, or even a Richardson/Bibbs TE dump pass mixed in.) Iowa historically struggles with mobile QBs who are also good passers.

If recent history is any indication Rocco will be a vanilla drop back statue and we will beat that horse way past dead before it’s too late and the panic finally sets in that we just spent the first 3 quarters doing exactly what Iowa wanted us to do.

It will be the same old song and dance,, EIU will crowd the LOS, ISU will try their best to run into the stacked box. We will throw those 7 yard out patterns and before long, one of the DB's from EIU will come out of his zone and step into the passing lane. We will again try to beat EIU at their game, and then look up in the 4th quarter down 10 to 14 points and then decide to open it up and throw the GD ball.

EIU will have zero to one turnover, while ISU will have two or three. That will be the difference in the game, ISU loses 17-14 in a game where we out gain them in total yardage, but the TO and a short field or two for EIU allows them to get enough points to win the game.

I get why Campbell would rather run/punt and hope Iowa's offense self destructs rather than air it out. If you throw 40 times with a leaky OL, you're inviting a lot of pressure on your QB playing his first game in Kinnick. If it were me, and I was going to throw it that much, it would be all screen plays and short passes, but Iowa does a pretty good job of batting those down at the DL, as we've seen in recent years.
I would disagree. Doing that allows the defense to crowd the line more and that kills the run game too. Whenever ISU has tried to do this, they end up with 8 guys within 3 yards of LOS on defense and then they can't do anything offensively. It's a CMC special.

I think they have to air it out a bit, loosen up the safeties as best they can, and then hit crosses and TE action mid-field. And THEN try to get some runs going. Even if those deep passes are incomplete or one gets picked, I think it's a risk worth taking. But then, I don't get paid for my thoughts on the matter.

You beat EIU by throwing the ball downfield and spreading them out. I was watching the first half of their game Saturday, their first pick the corner broke out of his zone, drove on the ball and beat the WR to the spot for the INT. Exactly like the Castro kid did to ISU last season. What was interesting was the safety had also came up, and their was a WR running wide open down the field on an out and up, if the QB had just faked a pump to the out WR and then pulled it down and hit the kid streaking up the field it would have been an easy TD.
The QB had plenty of time, to make the throw, but he locked into the quick out and it cost him.

We LOVE throwing 10-15 yd out routes to the sideline, which are actually more like 30 yd passes. It drives me nuts. You had better be wide open on those and have a QB with quite the arm to not get those picked off.

It’s what Iowa does, they let you take the 5 yard outs and lull the other side into just assuming that will be there all day and then when they’ve got you feeling comfortable is when they start jumping the outs. Figuring out when they’re going to jump the out is the tricky part. Not as simple as stopping your arm in mid motion and telling your receiver to go.

Frankly I’d run a pump and go within the first two plays and even if it doesn’t work it will at least keep Iowa’s DBs from not jumping the outs as aggressively the rest of the game.

Hey there.

Been a bit since I've been on here, but always appreciate checking things out here every now and then.

Looking forward to a tough, competitive and well-played Cy-Hawk series game this weekend.

I think both teams will have their hands full, which is typical of this game as it is played so early in the season.

Really looking forward to watching Heacock and Parker battle wits again. Two of the best in the CFB business, and we're blessed to have them in the same state.

A few notes:

  • Of course I watched replays of both games, Iowa & ISU. Typical week 1. Many good things and lots to clean up. Both teams left points on the field for sure. ISU's offensive efficiency was really solid. I don't read too much in the yardage that UND put up because ISU basically played umbrella coverage.
  • Something that will be different in this upcoming game will be Iowa's tempo on offense. They are breaking the huddle much sooner, and with an experienced play caller and former QB in Lester it is by design. More than a few times, with time on the clock before the :15 coach-to-player communication cutoff, Lester was able to get them out of the initial play call and into a better fit for what the defense was presenting. That's a subtle but huge difference from how Iowa has operated in the past under the coach's meathead son (NOT A BIG FAN!).
  • REALLY like Freyer. He's a dude. As valuable to ISU as Castro is to Iowa. Guys like that don't fall off trees, so let's enjoy watching them work out there this Saturday and this season.
I have no prediction or prognostication. Am just looking forward to an exciting, hard-fought game.

Best wishes for safety and health to everyone on and off the field.

Cheers.

That is why you have to keep throwing the out and up or flooding the area like Ill. State did and back the DB's off the WR. You use one play to set up the next play, ISU likes to fall in love with the quick out and you just cannot do it against a zone team like EIU.

The way to beat iowa is spread the ball all over the field. Make them chase all day the whole width and length of the field. Don't turn the ball over. Defense also has to find a couple capable guys at linebacker or they will control the game by dominating the middle of the field.
I agree although they've changed their scheme in the last 5-6 years to be faster on the perimeter. The biggest thing is having an accurate, composed QB who can make throws all over the field. I think Rocco is the best we've had. Brock played pretty well in 2019 but got tunnel vision in 2021.

Just going to toss this in here.

Iowa seems thrilled that the finally found a WR in VanderZee. That’s nice. Dominic Overby is going to be better.

Then another good WR commit in Terrance Smith. Sure, exciting. Except that Karon Brookins is going to be better.

It’s fun watching them trying to play catchup.
