Ultimately about where I figured.

There are some things I personally think should different.

ND and Clemson should not be ahead of us, Michigan jumped too much for beating USC and USC didnt drop as much as they should have.

But we all know how this works, Put the B1G and SEC in as many top spots as you can so you can justify keeping them there no matter if they lose or win.

Ultimately if we keep winning we will move up little by little, and it will take care of itself. With that we have much less room for error than others.

This is how I kinda see it. If you’re not Big Ten or SEC there will always be a permanent chip your shoulder. 8 of the current top 10 teams are all Big Ten and SEC. 18 is nice but the team should always their eyes focused on the next team on the schedule.

But it matters because unless you win your conference championship the ranking will help determine the other teams that get in. Sitting there at 10-2 and ranked 10th you have a shot, ranked at 18 with the same record and forget it.
These rankings are meaningless, playoff rankings are all that matter. No, ap and coaches have zero impact on playoff rankings.

Our schedule hasn't necessarily been a gauntlet. We're going to win a couple more before we take a lump. I'm liking our chances at getting 10 wins for sure, we have a good shot at playoff if we can stay or get healthy.

I think Michigan isn't really that good, and I think USC isn't really all that good... but if Michigan goes 9-3 with their losses being texas, OSU, and Oregon, they're almost guaranteed to be in the playoff. If they go 10-2 they ARE in.

Yeah... they aren't that good at all.... QB is terrible.

I agree, but it doesn't matter. they're the defending national champs and if they're 9-3 with their only losses being to 3 other top 10 teams, they're in the playoff. Likely over an 12-1 big 12 team 2nd place team (if that somehow happens).
Agree. There's going to be quite a few undeserving teams in the playoff over others that deserve it... we just need to start accepting that fact right now. If you're in the B1G or SEC... you're one of the "good guys"... everyone else is not really wanted. It's going to suck on who gets "selected". CW has constantly been trying to prepare all of us for this inevitability... and he's right.

ESPN had 11 contributors pick the playoff field.

The teams and seedlings change (ISU gets the nod a couple times), but the conference breakdown does not:

SEC: 5 teams
Big 10: 3 teams
ACC: 2 teams
Big 12: 1 team
Gof5: 1 team

My wife once said to me few years back, it sucks not being ranked when we were waiting for a score update. She was right too. Being ranked means the ISU score is on the Top 25 ticker, game highlights are automatically shown on ESPN Gamenight Final, etc. So, they do mean something, Now, it doesn't matter to me (right now) whether they are 20th, 18th or 16th, but I most definitely think being ranked has its privileges for Iowa State!

In a sense... yeah... the only rankings that matter are the ones at the end of the year, but that doesn't paint the whole picture.

In a big way.. the very first poll of the year, before the season even starts, is huge. Take ND for example. If they hadn't been ranked ridiculously high in the first poll... there's no way they are ranked now. The only reason they are still ranked now is because they were ranked high before a single game had even been played.

I think that for the next few years, it'll be 4 SEC, 4 B1G, 1 Go5, and then 3 teams between the ACC and Big 12, whichever conference has a better year probably gets 2. If ND has a good year they can bump an SEC/B1G team.

They will still rise or fall based off of winning though. If they finish 11-1, their ranking will be justified. If they slip to 8-4, they will slip and not be a factor. That just never bothers me at all. If ISU or any other major team just wins their games, they will sky rocket up the rankings and pass the other teams who lose games. If ISU is 13-0 or 12-1, they will be ranked really high, and where they started (not ranked) will not matter.

Need to insure BiG 10/SEC stays strong though the season, so despite late season losses, a 3 loss team is still with solid rankings.
