At first, I thought welp here we go another unintended consequence of NIL, just like I thought could happen.

But if he really is sitting out because he didn’t receive what was promised, good on him. That’s a bad precedent for schools (collectives) to start. Offer to pay a kid, stiff him, and then say “Well you’re already here, so now you’re stuck. Might as well play out the rest of the season”

The rumor from the UNLV insider end is that after KU game, Sluka got an NIL agent (or had one in his ear). Came to Odom saying he needed $300k or this was his move. Odom said no and so Sluka cleared out his locker and left.

Who knows the truth and it'll be spun by both sides. I tend to think at a place like UNLV it feels like a kid who transferred up a level, had some success and is now trying to get his only payday. Real piece of **** if that version of events is true.

That said, my hot take is that Sluka isn’t even very good. He can’t throw, is a glorified running back who can make some plays with his legs. I don’t see any big time teams clamoring for him and UNLV will be okay with out him if Odom still has the locker room. He had to win the job over another very comparable transfer from Campbell who can step in now.

it feels like these young people are learning that agreements not in paper form don't mean much of anything.
I have learned that even on paper, it depends upon the character of the person signing it. Do you want to keep an employee that doesn't want to be there? Just like we have learned years ago, what does the word "is" mean?

This sucks but college is pro now. If in the NFL you made an agreement to play and they quit paying you, you would quit also. Guessing there is more to the story but wherever he transfers should immediatly become bowl non eligible.

“NIL” is such a joke. Just go to professional contracts at this point. If you want to leave and go somewhere else, pay a buyout like the coaches have to.

UNLV fans and accounts seem to be arguing that he is asking for more money than what was originally agreed upon. The story is he got an Agent after the KU game and someone got into his ear that he is worth more. When he told Odom he was told they weren’t changing the amount.

Saying all that, I am a bit skeptical that many details came out so quickly and it seems like a “story” that might be created up to make UNLV not look bad.

Wonder if we will get the full story some time.

He kind of reminded me of Joel Lanning, Our old Quarterback/inside linebacker

i can see where the kid is coming from... he was at holy cross.... got told $$$$ to go to UNLV (probably had lots of offers).... he is there now but no money.

Hes not going to NFL. This is his 1 shot., I dont blame him
This is my thinking, if they promised him money and they aren't fufilling their bargain. Players have power now to combat the bait and switch.
At least he was a little more professional about it compared to that whole Florida situation.

Didn't Illini basketball have this problem too a couple years ago?

It's almost as if there needs to be structure in an industry like this where billions of dollars are being thrown around. If you're surprised by this happening, you haven't been paying attention at all.
Why do college athletics need special rules that the vast majority of employers and employees aren't subjected to? The majority of states have Right to Work laws. Employees can leave with no notice, for any reason. Does it hurt a business when a good employee takes a different job offer, for more money? Yep. But that's the way it works. I can go ask my boss for a raise, right now, and walk out on the spot if I don't like their response. What makes college athletics so different than the rest of the business world, that schools need extra protection from employee turnover?

If he leaves school, there's not anything legally enforceable. A scholarship is an agreement to play football in exchange for paying for school. If he quits the team and stops going to class, the agreement ends.
Which is why it really needs to go to contracts. Someone in charge (should be the NCAA but they are useless) needs to create a standard contract that all schools use that protects both schools' and players' interests fairly.

And frankly, this protects the mid and lower tier schools more than the blue bloods. Which is about the only reason it might not happen, despite it being in the best interest of about 90% of everybody.

We are going to have to have more cases like this until the conferences step up and start getting contracts between the kid and the collective. Something that binds the two together for a set number of years. I would say the NCAA, but they are worthless now, and in charge of nothing related to collectives, schools and athletes.

Why does nearly every professional sports league have a players union?
