Campustown needs more bars. And they should make that section of Welch from LW to the clock thing a pedestrian only area. For the most part the new bars suck. Capone's is ok I guess. I miss Es Tas's old location.

I totally agree with the pedestrian area. But, it probably won't happen due to the fire station on Welch. Rerouting fire trucks around the block is asking for trouble. I could see it changing to one way with no parking though. That would make for wider sidewalks and possibly some outdoor seating.

People's should be salivating at the shot to get back into that location. I'm so glad to see those ******** fail. Why couldn't they just have left People's alone? Call me vindictive, but it was absolutely idiotic to kick out A LANDMARK, a bar that had been featured in Playboy multiple times, the longest running bar in Campustown and an absolute Ames icon, because you think you can do a better job. Really? Really?

What is Cy's Roost no longer there?

I don't know that I totally agree with that. IMO People's was a dump because the building owner had no interest in investing in rennovation. And the business owner didn't because his lease was going to be up and the uncertainty of it being renewed. Even though the place was run down, it was STILL the best bar in Ames. Zmolek seems to be doing OK in DM, so I don't know that he is totally clueless about running a bar.

It seems to me that there should be some decent places available if People's really wants to be back in Ames. The old Varsity Theatre would make an awesome bar. Or, if that 5 story building goes up across from Subway, there is going to be commercial space on the ground floor. I hope that it happens because Campustown has really went downhill in the last 5 years.

I disagree. I was a freshman in 2003, and I think the whole Campustown area has more going for it today than it did when I started. Outside of People's there are more bars that have music, cheap drinks, and a generally chill atmosphere. There are more, and better food options as well. It's not up to its potential, but it hasn't gone downhill in the past 5 years. Imo, it's gotten better...

I'll agree to disagree. Losing a true live music venue like Peoples was a huge blow. Cy's and L/F have went from a decent place to a dive bar. That remodel was terrible and what work they did hasn't been kept up. I do agree that Capone's is an upgrade from MoJazz. IMO Paddy's and Mickey's have went downhill. But more than any one place, the whole area isn't as clean as it used to be. More litter and gum stuck on the sidewalks, plus the building exteriors aren't kept up well. They really need to put some thought into improving the area.

Cy's is a shell of its former self. That place was a lot cooler when it was a piece of ****.

IMO, campus town is fine. Move the fire station, add more bars, and bring back DQ and McDonalds. I don't give a crap what campus town looks like during the day. The area has one use and one use only. It doesn't need to look like the oval office.

Bring back Tazzles!

That will solve the problem!!! While I thoroughly enjoyed that place, I can't believe we didn't have more of our athletes get minor on the premises because it appeared many of them were there for most of their career. (I could be wrong and they were all actually chinese gymnasts disguised as college football and basketball players making them legal)
So what are kids doing these days with the lack of establishments??? Are they all just cramming into fewer bars or are they finding a different alternative outside of campustown?

The City of Ames is in serious talks to move that fire station. I guess they don't like that it's in Campustown any more than anybody else does. There was a thread about this a couple months back. It may not happen this semester, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see progress sooner rather than later.

Meh, it's Iowa State- we've always been expert house-partiers. Bars are for pansies and people with too much money. 2 out of 3 West Ames apartments have parties going on the weekends, if that answers your question.

The bars get pretty packed, so if you want to get drinks quickly you usually go earlier, but if you don't care then you get drunk with friends before at somones place, then head to the bars. We need new bars, but instead were tearing down more bars. Campustown Property Management is the company putting up the new apartment on Welch. Seeing as it's a national company with apartment complexes all over the country I highly doubt they care what Ames, Iowa students think about tearing down more bars, it's actually suppose to be some type of an attachment to Legacy towers is what I've heard and I highly doubt they will have bars in the bottom floor, they don't have any now if the bottom floor of legacy, Legends is the only one.
