OMG yes, it's so bad. r/economics is also horrible. You need to find the ones that younger people have no interest in like r/Bogleheads/

Ha, any more I just go right to proper Bogleheads forums instead of a middle man like reddit.

Did I get one deleted?

Do we get a heads up when something is deleted here? The Panera Mafia running CF??
No idea on your end. I got a notification that "something I quoted had been deleted and I may need to edit my post to make it make sense."

The really small subs of reddit are great. The large ones are complete trash that are filled with group think/circle jerk. I'm not even talking political, I'm talking everything. Cars, cities, travel, food, etc. I swear the demographics must be 75% white dudes between the age of 16-22.
Ya. The dialogue in the political subreddits is not worth engaging in. I mostly just use it as a feed to link me to news articles and happenings. From there it’s straight to CF to find out what I should think about those happenings.

The smaller subreddits are great. Ultra specific. Topical. Very funny. All of the things.

It would never even cross my mind to go on there, find a company's page, and complain to them through that channel. There probably isn't much hope for your Twitter experience to be what you claim to want it to be.
This actually works surprisingly well in some instances. A lot of large companies have dedicated staff that will get you a lot quicker response. It worked for me the one time I tried it with Medicacom, but I've heard that airlines are also quick to respond.

It's probably different with each company but here is what I've seen.

Chat-Handled by the same type of people that handle phone calls
Email-See above
Phone calls-See above
Social Media-You don't want clowns handling your social media. You're probably going to be serviced by an experienced domestic employee

I've gotten the best customer service from a Twitter message. A few times.

Testifying
I mostly use Facebook for groups of items I own.
Specific vehicle models, boat, power tools, firearms.
If you're in some good groups, you can get answers pretty quickly. Like "thinking of taking the kids tubing on Rathbun and I see the water level is down, are there any areas I need to keep an eye out for debris?"

Where did I crap on anybody? I said you won’t miss it. You won’t, and your mental health will likely improve.

I apologize. It just came off as a little holier-than-thou. Sorry if I misread it.

Trust me I’m not holier than anybody. If it came off that way I apologize.

I’m more of an evangelist about it - I gave up Facebook/Twitter years ago now and it’s been really good for me personally.

It just seems like people in our society love blaming social media for a lot of our ills, then sort of refuse to stop using it themselves like they are immune to the problems with it.

I've been looking at FB marketplace to sell a couple of kayaks and accidentally opened up my old FB account for the first time in about 9-10 years.

I had almost forgotten it was even z thing.

I'm not sure there's necessarily an inconsistency there. Social media does deserve some blame for a lot of our ills, because when people aren't good at managing their experience with it, or lack the media literacy to evaluate who they can trust, it fills the void with a lot of garbage.

It's a lot like real life. If you can manage to keep bad people at bay, things go pretty well. If not, it's going to drag down your experience.

Soooooo how about Bluesky. Let's get back to it. I spent a bunch of time yesterday noodling around with it and finding people to follow, making some test posts, etc. Here are more accounts I've found (I'm following some).

SPORTS

Steven Godfrey
Sickos Committee
Secret Base
Homefield Apparel

RedditCFB (not posting yet)
Diana Moskovitz
Howard Beck

OTHER

The Verge
Colossal
Kottke
Defector

The Atlantic
The Onion
Washington Post

As seen earlier in this thread, starter packs are a really nice feature that allow anyone, yes, even you, to create a suggested list (or multiple) of people to follow centered around a topic. The very concept is becoming a meme. Ex:

Hello all: It is with a heavy heart that I remove my Starter Pack of "Trustworthy Mesopotamian Copper Ingot Merchants Within the City-State of Ur." I have been informed about some pretty unfortunate oversights on my part and ultimately platformed some creators who should not have been platformed.

I must be doing something weird on X, I follow people I want to hear from and don't follow those that I don't. I then choose the option "following".
You see ads on X?

I must have a much better ad blocker. I dont think I have ever seen a single ad on X. Mind you I mostly only go there on occasion and rarely on anything other than my computer.

The ISU parent page on FB is well to be honest.... idiotic. Nothing but Helicopter parents that have to ask the same questions over and over for simple things that can be found on a simple google search, on Cyclones.com, the ISU main page or on CF. The type of parents that probably were still wiping their kids butts the day before they sent them to college.

Some parents really need to get a grip and let their, now adult children, go, and do something on their own. And maybe try to take 5 seconds to look something up themselves or even check to see if the same question was asked in the last 32 seconds before posting. At some points you just have to laugh at these people, other times you feel pity for them, and other times its just plain annoying.

Many times I see something and I remind my daughter about it, but it, is still up to her to take care of it. I have never logged into any of my daughters ISU accounts or parent accounts. Not to see her bill, not to see her schedule, not to see her grades, not for anything. It is 100% up to her to make sure things get done, things get paid, and she passes her classes. If she needs something from me she asks for it and then handles it from there. And you know what, she is going to be much more prepared for real life by learning to handle things on her own than by having mommy and daddy do everything for her.

But as you said if you find a good group, for what you are looking for, there is a wealth of information to be gained. You just may have to filter out the garbage between the knowledge.

I hate the way it is moderated. Out of control moderators. Rarely use it any more as a result.
Definitely a problem. Unfortunately, it's unlikely to change, since moderators are unpaid.

Im not convinced they actually have moderators and if they do they dont manage them at all. Many of the forums I go to always say "looking for great people to add to our moderating staff" but they never seem to add any.

It varies pretty wildly from subreddit to subreddit. I've encountered a few that are horrifically over-regulated by people clearly on a power trip, while others are the wild west where anything and everything goes.

I'm pleading for people to keep this about Bluesky. There's already pages of unrelated social media stuff. This is not about Reddit or Threads or Facebook. Please please please start another thread.

Probably just a lot of turnover because modding is super hard, lol jk

I was actually just about to ask for more information about who's on there... I see you added some context in post #71. I asked earlier if any ISU MBB players on it, and it doesn't seem like they are, but are entities like official Cyclone FB/MBB/WBB accounts on there yet?

I guess, from what I've seen, it's still a long way from it actually challenging Twitter.

And, once it does, what's to stop it from turning into Twitter 2.0 if this is truly a tipping point? If people flood over to it, what's to stop it from becoming what Twitter is today?

I know these sound cynical, but they're genuine questions I have about any would-be replacement app like BS/Threads/whatever.
