Bummer, I figured it was coming though with Costner trying to cut back on his filming availability to finish out season 5. My hope is the sequel keeps most of the same characters and the premise of this show intact with some twist like they bring in McConaughey as a character in some capacity where he's brought in to manage or save the ranch or is some distant relative that decided to relocate and join the family in their fight. Just so many good storylines to play out with the rest of the cast where Taylor could write this into a way to keep the Yellowstone story as it currently is intact without John being the main focal point anymore.

Either that or he's going to be brought in to join the part of the crew that is headed down to the 6666 Ranch but would be a shame if we lost all the good plots going on with the other characters like Kayce and Monica and Thomas Rainwater, etc. that are just as likable characters as Costner's. I really do hope some day Taylor writes a 1980's version of Yellowstone with Josh Lucas as John Dutton as he's so good as the young John Dutton when they have had their flashbacks.

Meant to update this thread recently after Kevin Costner revealed he will not be in part 2 of season 5 when it airs in November. That sucks, he explained why which I get but the show has become such a huge hit it is going to be a big letdown when they basically have to kill his character off without him actually being in the episode. My guess is they probably kill him off in a manner where they don't need him on screen like a car accident, car bomb, or assassination where they could just dress someone that resembles him but shoot it from a distance and angle where you can't see the person's face but it resembles his character. Regardless that is a big letdown because there won't be much of a storyline behind it probably.

* Note: if you aren't up to date with the series then read below with caution as I don't want to spoil anything with my speculation, but it's been over a year now since the last episode aired so there's been plenty of time to be caught up too.

Looking forward to the series wrapping up because without Costner I don't see how they can continue it as is for any more seasons. The supporting cast is great but without John Dutton as the focal point of most of the ongoing story lines I'm curious to see how they close it out. The rumor is some of the current cast could be part of a new spinoff show with the 6666 Ranch - specifically Jefferson White and Kathryn Kelly (Jimmy and Emily) who already are working on the ranch now in Yellowstone. My guess is some of the ranch hand characters that are headed down there too with the cattle when they left off in the middle of season 5 are likely to be under consideration for the cast too. The plot will thicken as they wrap up the series as now it makes you wonder if the Dutton's finally lose the ranch with John out of the picture and Jamie is literally in bed with the group trying to acquire the land so I do see the possibility that everything could fall apart with the ranch by the end of the show although I'm to the point with the Jamie character that I'm hoping it doesn't end well for him.

Lastly, it was rumored that Matthew McConaughey was going to be part of a Yellowstone spinoff (whether that was going to be part of the 6666 Ranch or another era of Yellowstone like they did with 1883 and 1923) but now it sounds like the negotiations with that are not going well and he may back out. I keep saying I'd love to see a spinoff with the era Josh Lucas plays John Dutton which if I had to guess that would probably be somewhere around the 1990ish time frame. He does such a great job as young John Dutton with the flashbacks and always liked his work in other movies that it would make for a good 1 or 2 season series I think to have him as the main character. He apparently wanted the original part that Costner got but given his age it would be hard to imagine him as the father when the other main characters aren't much younger than he is. Josh is 53 while Cole Hauser is 49, Kelly Reilly 47 Wes Bentley 45 and Luke Grimes 40 so would have looked awkward even with some makeup to believe he was old enough to be the father.

This show should end with Costner leaving. Dying and the immediate repercussions and fallout. Don't recast or try to drag out another few seasons.

Great show but I hate the long gaps between seasons. I mean Tate was just a little boy when this started and feels like he's way older each time they air the next season He's 16 now in real life the show started in 2018 so I guess he was 10 when it started. Really interested to see how they kill off Costner's character without him being part of the 2nd half of the season. It's weird that the trailer has him in it even if they are old clips.

Haven't seen anything yet about the 2nd season of 1923 and thought there was going to be another Yellowstone spin off titled 1944 and a 6666 Ranch spin off too but been pretty quiet on those fronts.

Good call. What happened to 1944, 1968 and 1984. They were all in the works, not to mention the back half of 1923.

I binge watched the first two season in probably a week or two. But haven’t picked it back up since football started. Really enjoyed the first two seasons.

I was really into Yellowstone the first two seasons then it kind of got ridiculous and became too much Taylor Sheridan. I’ll still watch but the writing is pretty out there with a lot of plot holes.

Without spoiling anything anyone have some general thoughts on the new episode? Seeing a lot of outrage on social media over how they killed off John Dutton which we all knew was coming once Costner said he was not going to be a part of the second half of the season. People seem to be be mad about it and are blaming Taylor Sheridan but it was Costner that chose not to come back so I don't really have a problem with it because it was either replace him with another actor which would of been really strange at this point or kill off his character in a manner that did not require being on-screen.

It was kind of weird when they had to back track 6 weeks prior so the storyline was a little slow to develop but by the end of the episode it's now set up to be a fast paced and action packed ending to the series I think. Kelly Reilly is such a great actress I hope she finally wins an award at some point for this show. I'll post this clip from the episode as it doesn't spoil anything. Another great Rip moment, show his soft side then his badass side, lol

Can't believe there are just 2 episodes left. A lot of storylines out there to be wrapped up in a short amount of time IMO unless the plan is to roll some of them into whatever possible spinoff might be. Probably won't share any too specific thoughts on this season until after it wraps up as I don't want to spoil anything for those that aren't up to date yet.

On a side note, I'm enjoying Landman so far. Billy Bob Thorton was the perfect casting for that role.

Interesting they used season finale and not series finale when they were previewing last night that there were 2 episodes left.

I didn't catch that but that would make some sense as long as they can keep the bulk of the current cast onboard. Just feels like there is so much storyline to wrap up right now even if the finale would be a 2 hour episode. I think these episodes without Costner in them is enough proof that you can keep the show interesting without him. I really think that the Beth/Rip and Kayce/Monica storylines are plenty to keep the content interesting for at least another season if the cast wants to keep the show alive. Tate and Carter are both older now too and their roles have grown along with them and all the other side stories going on with the ranch hands, the ranch itself with the battle to stay alive, and the Indian reservation characters leaves plenty of meat on the bone to make another full season worth watching. At one point I thought they were setting this up for the spinoff to be they move operations to Texas at the 6666 Ranch and keep some of the characters around but I am not so certain of that anymore.

I thought 1883 and 1923 were well done and there is still a 2nd season of 1923 coming at some point as well as possibly another rumored spinoff from sometime between 1923 and today too. I think a season just of that time era when Rip and Beth were teenagers would be interesting and Josh Lucas who plays John Dutton in that time era is a great actor to play that if they did. Although the 2 actors that play young Rip and Beth may be a little too old by the time they got around to filming that but I like the story idea. I think Taylor has a lot of possibilities to create more of these "Yellowstone eras" type of prequels like 1883 and 1923 if he keeps casting the roles well with good storylines like he has up till now.

Anybody else think the killing off of Colby was completely unnecessary and terrible writing? What was the point of it? Everybody understands that things are against the ranch and adding another death to a side character no less was stupid writing

The killing off of Colby certainly shocked me, I wasn't expecting that.
Well now that the spoiler is out there... Yeah that one shocked me too. Wonder if there is another season in the works like discussed above and he didn't want to be a part of it so like Costner they just killed him off. I haven't kept up with the "Stories From the Bunkhouse" episodes he Jefferson White and Ian Bohen do after each episode that talk about what happened so may have to watch that when it comes out and see what they say about last night's episode.
