TJ at Iowa State is currently 22-19 against ranked teams. He is the only ISU coach in the last 30 years with a winning record in such games.

11-2 at home
3-11 on the road
8-6 at neutral sites

Other coaches since Johnny:
In four seasons, Tim Floyd was 7-20
In five seasons, Larry Eustachy was 12-21
In three seasons, Wayne Morgan was 7-11
In four seasons, Greg McDermott was 1-19
In five seasons, Fred Hoiberg was 23-25
In six seasons, Steve Prohm was 17-43

Ward first year was “we need to get a better guy than this”

Ward second year “can we get him for another year, this guy is good”
Wasn't Ward's first season almost a washout because of the visa issue, which caused him to miss the full summer?

I've said in another thread, IMO Brockington was the key to getting this started. Hunter certainly contributed that 1st year of TJ's tenure, but Brockington was a man. He exuded leadership and toughness. That toughness is the foundation this program is built on. Rob Jones, Lipsey (not a transfer) and now Chatfield are extentions of that toughness.

That said, Gilbert and Curtis Jones have now moved up on the list in terms of accomplishments. And both are plenty tough.

Greg's only win was @ #5 KSU in his last regular season game :puke:

He also played relatively few ranked opponents.

Otz ~ 11.7 per year
Prohm ~ 10.0 per year
Fred ~ 9.6 per year
Mac ~ 5.0 per year
Morgan ~ 6.0 per year
Larry ~ 6.4 per year
Tim ~ 6.8 per year

This highlights how tough the Big 12 has been in the last ~10-15 years. There were some good teams in the conference for sure in the Floyd/Eustachy era but also some real cupcakes.

I don’t think that TJ is a great coach. Good, not great. But what he IS great at is putting together a roster and playing a system that makes the best use of the talent on the roster. And also finding guys that not only compliment the other players, but fit in with the culture.

Kind of the opposite of Prohm. He was not very good at piecing the puzzle together.

You just described a great coach.

BREs play the first 1.5 years was equally suspect.

And that’s beni

Yeah pretty much a wash. I think Brock and Gabe both are very high up. both took a chance to come to a team that won 2 games. So in my opinion they both got this thing started.

I'm pretty sure my first thought with him was along the lines of "I thought TJ was a better recruiter than that," "Well, at least it's somebody," and probably something like "Well, that's what happens when we're down and the AD hires his buddy," since I was so impressed with the hire at the moment.

All that said, TJ's hit rate on transfers is insane and generally impossible. He doesn't really miss at all. Even Pav had some moments.
For me.... When you tell a guy we start June 1 at 5:00-6:00am with summer workouts and it is not going to be easy. You separate the wheat from the chaff right there. The bonus is you build team spirit right away because you have been through some stuff together.
There are no pretenders that get PT at ISU with Otz. You have it, give it all or you aren't here. It's that simple.

What's impressed me the most regarding Otz's transfer portal use is that he's not bringing in the highest rated portal players. He finds underrated players from mid-majors that fit into ISU's culture. For example, based off 24/7's rankings of players in the portal in 2023, Gilbert was #100 and Jones was #185. Now they're the leading scorers on the #3 team in the country. Also, Jefferson was ranked #131 and Jackson was #201, both of which are starting on the #3 team in the country. As a comparison, Kansas brought in the #4, #23, and #37 transfers this year. Mayo has worked out for Kansas, but apparently Self isn't happy with the other two.

Can someone explain this to me? Jones played 2 seasons at Buffalo and is in his second season at ISU. What am I missing?
I think the argument would be he missed out on a "COVID Year" because he played that year at a community college.

I don't buy it, I say the NCAA eligibility clock starts when you begin NCAA play and he's out of eligibility by that standard. Would be great to have him back another year though, maybe he can go off Trae Young-style.

yeah just like Brock Purdy & Rocco Becht for best ISU QB of all-time, best basketball coach is a two horse race between Fred & TJ, and depending on how this season turns out, Otz may take the clear lead.

Ummm... I know people don't want to admit it but Hunter was the best player in the game against LSU for sure at least. Not sure I would give it to Brockington single-handedly.

Brockington had a good game against LSU, Hunter won the game for us with his big shots.

Then they both weren’t as good against WI, but Kalscheur showed out instead.

Which has been a fun hallmark of Otz’s teams. Seems like somebody steps up in new ways each game. See: Heise against Marquette, Chatfield on Monday in Boulder.

he was at IHCC in 2020-21 so does that make this his "bonus" COVID year? but if the JUCO doesn't count he can get another?

After Maui and Boulder, I think that CU big man has nightmares about Chat

I have to admit this year's guys have surprised me.

Jackson and Heise are very solid and very close to what I expected them to be. Jefferson and Chat are way more productive than I imagined. The fact that all four are panning out is incredible.

I had no idea Jefferson would be this good and this mulit-tooled.

Jefferson's PER (player efficiency rating) is currently identical to Niang's senior year at 25.9. That's pretty much as high as any player we've had in the era of that stat. Curtis Jones is very high too. Jones and Gilbert are around 23 which is also right with all of our All Big 12 players in recent decades.

I think Jefferson is a few % points of better 3PT shooting away from some nice NBA $$$

I would think that if COVID year doesn’t count and neither does JUCO he’d still have played 4 years between Buffalo and here (because COVID year and JUCO were the same year). Unless I’m missing something…

But there must be enough questions for him and TJ to even be talking about it.
