For what its worth, the measuring stick for best Iowa St. basketball coach is probably Fred.

You can make a case for Larry, but it is exclusively based on a 15 month period from Dec. 1999 to Feb. 2021 and you have to kind of ignore the other 3+ years of his tenure. Now if you want to just talk about highest ceiling/best a coach has had an Iowa St. team playing then that is Larry. The next best is the 2013-14 Fred team. That's my current historic measuring stick for TJ/this team, do they end the season closer to that Larry period or that Fred team? Regardless of where that ends up, both are a great place to be and its going to be fun to watch the rest of the season play out.

Don't jump the gun. You'll end up looking ridiculous.
Give him a couple decades or so before getting too fired up.

Certainly would not want to end up looking ridiculous. Like you. Not sure if I can make it to my 90’s so might not find out I guess.

By my count, McDermott had multiple guys that played in the NBA on his roster every single year, including his first. It's not like he never had any talent.
06-07: Mike Taylor and Wesley Johnson
07-08: Johnson, Brackins, and Garrett
08-09: Brackins, Garrett, and Justin Hamilton
09-10: Brackins, Garrett, and Hamilton

Not to mention the fact that if you only consider the 4 years that were Prohm's own doing, he still made an NCAA tournament when McDermott failed to do so. Prohm also never missed a tournament when he had multiple NBA guys on the roster (unless Bolton manages to work his way into the league).
If you would've asked me I would've been pretty sure that Paul Shirley had a much more extensive career than Justin Hamilton.

Johnny Orr: 218-200 (79-117); 1 Sweet Sixteen
Tim Floyd: 81-47 (30-30); 1 Sweet Sixteen
Larry Eustachy: 101-59 (42-38); 1 Elite Eight
Fred Hoiberg: 115-56 (49-39); 1 Sweet Sixteen; 6 wins over AP Top 10 teams in 5 seasons
TJ Otzelberger: 83-36 (32-25); 2 Sweet Sixteens; 8 wins over AP Top 10 teams in 3.3 seasons
-> if ISU meets expectations this year and goes 25-6 (15-5): 95-41 (44-30)

However you look at it, TJ's 3+ years have been the greatest coaching success at Iowa State since and including the Orr era
Coming off of a 2-22 season and during a stretch where the Big12 has been the toughest conf too
