I’m not in Doomsday mode, though Matt’s willingness to officially speak to/“interview” with NFL teams right now tells me a few things that might be true:
- He has NFL ambitions (at some point)
- He feels he has achieved enough at ISU to consider what he’s done means he’s leaving it better than he found it
- He wants to learn more about how it works in the NFL.
^^ Maybe this applies to how you run a college program in an environment that grows more professional by the year. Or maybe he uses this knowledge to prep for a Pro job he really wants when that time comes (Chiefs, Browns, Steelers?)

He’s given us almost a decade. He won a Fiesta Bowl. He’s taken us to two XII titles. We just beat 10 win Miami on a neutral field. I’d be sad to see him go, but things have never been better for Cyclone football. I wouldn’t hold it against him if he left now.
I agree with all of this. What I will say is this.

It felt weird when Rick Pitino tried to coach in NBA, it felt weird when Nick Saban tried to coach for the Dolphins. Matt Campbell is not a superstar at their level but he's a "college type coach". I see his style working so much better with younger guys than pro level guys.

Case in point - would Caleb Williams even listen to him/respect him in a closed door meeting. I'm not confident he would. Some guys are made to coach guys who make $20MM a year, and others are not. I think Campbell is a "college coach". His thing is all about character, development, best version of yourself, there's nothing NFL about that to me.

That would be a bad hire... so the Jets will probably do it. ;)

I can't see CMC being a good NFL head coach, but I guess you never know? "Teaching" 18-22 year olds seems to be his wheelhouse IMO... not NFL players.
It's all paid athletes now, so thats a big change for Campbell to consider and his past indifferent to the NFL.

The fact that he's accepted the interview for the bears HC job is telling. He's rejected past interviews in recent years. Telling... But if he goes, I'm sure Pollard will do due dillagence with finding a replacement. So in short-- I'd say 70% he bails, 30% he stays in my crystal ball...

You realize the Bears would first actually have to offer him the job out of 25-30 guys they’re interviewing, right?

I think there's a 0% chance he stays in anyone's crystal ball. The man's used to living in a house.

He's also accepted interviews and not taken the job.

Hopefully JP has gotten better at this process. He’s 2 for 2 recently.

I don't think we even know that he has accepted an interview.

Isn't the wording 'expected to interview'.

As a "Family Man" I'd think you would have 2X time with family as a coach at Iowa State than any NFL job or many College jobs. Matt's a smart guy, I'm assuming his salary in Ames is good enough to survive on. It's amazing how Matt's and Kirk's carrer mirror each other. Kirk was given several extensions to keep him at iowa. Main difference is JP was proactive and gave the extension proactivly.

Some of you are short-changing CMC.

He’s been linked to a number of opportunities all over the place in college, and a couple in the NFL.
Those aren’t just handed out like lollipops.
He has earned the attention and respect.

As I’ve mentioned before, in college, he’s not leaving for anything but Ohio State or ND. And I’m not saying he would ever be offered those jobs.

As for the NFL, He’s had dealings with Ryan Poles before and there’s nothing wrong with either side exploring further.

I'm also a Bears fan. I think that it's very unlikely that Matt Campbell will be the next head coach in Chicago. It never hurts to put your name out there. If he stays long enough in Ames, he will have his own statue outside Jack Trice Stadium.

He can be a great college HC. But NFL gigs are a different animal. Very few get these jobs. Rhule would be the only recent example with no previous pro experience that I can think of. Did not work out well.

Option 1: CMC got a phone call, he picked up the phone and had a conversation.

Option 2: Jamie Pollard is playing 5d chess. Got matt to sign a huge buyout contract and immediate started trying to get Matt hired somewhere else to collect.

Option 3: The SEC/ESPN put this rumor out there as part of their disinformation master plan.
Option 4: CMC Is offered the Bears job and turns it down. Says he has more to do at Iowa State and loves the University. Cements his lore in Ames.

Yep. Campbell loves to turn boys into men. In the NFL he would need an entire identity shift. Not sure he's good enough at any one thing to be a pro coach but I could see him as a GM.

Here’s the thing about the NFL- the bears have been announcing to the public who they have finished interviews with. Should know if this is legit or not.
