For what its worth, the measuring stick for best Iowa St. basketball coach is probably Fred.

You can make a case for Larry, but it is exclusively based on a 15 month period from Dec. 1999 to Feb. 2021 and you have to kind of ignore the other 3+ years of his tenure. Now if you want to just talk about highest ceiling/best a coach has had an Iowa St. team playing then that is Larry. The next best is the 2013-14 Fred team. That's my current historic measuring stick for TJ/this team, do they end the season closer to that Larry period or that Fred team? Regardless of where that ends up, both are a great place to be and its going to be fun to watch the rest of the season play out.
Last years team was better than any of Fred’s. So far, this one is definitely shaping to be as well and could end better than Larry’s peak

TJ has definitely outperformed Fred and was instrumental to Fred's success to boot. Make no mistake, Fred was great, but TJ had outperforned him. TJ is certainly more consistent than Larry and hopefully will at least equal his best this year.

I find GOAT conversations incredibly tedious and unnecessary. TJ is ******* awesome and I'm thrilled he's here. Outside getting deeper into the tournament I'd like to see him get a regular season title. Larry before he nuked the program accomplished both of those things
It would take a collapse or TJ leaving unexpectedly for him not to go down as the best coach in ISU history.

If he resigned today would he be the GOAT? No. But he’s not, so he will be the GOAT, and probably not too long from now.

I was not on the TJ bandwagon when he got hired at all. I figured he’d get good talent and the teams would be mostly in tournament contention, but not close to this good, this consistently.

People seem to mold the short but high peak of Eustachey, and sustained success of Hoiberg and think TJ has to eclipse a composite of both to be the GOAT.

TJs better than Fred, Larry, Johnny, and Tim.

No need for fans to miss out on the good old days while we’re in them. We’ve got the best coach in school history at the helm right now. Soak it up fans.

What’s fun is that it seems like a different guy steps up each night. Jones and Lipsey went to work last night when Gilbert didn’t have his usual stuff. Thought Jefferson stepped up when it was clear Jackson and Chat were struggling.

And we still have two full months to work on any weaknesses and fully gel. Exciting times.
Guess Jackson was under the weather.

I've felt this way with all of TJ's teams. Prior iterations, it always felt "will the clouds align?" "will we get the right matchups?" "will we blow the lead?" or "will we show up?" even with some of our most talented teams, they always felt a bit unpredictable.

TJ's teams are anything but unpredictable.
Always show up,though

TJ has had a far more consistent program than Larry could ever dream of. he hit lightning in the bottle when he got Tinsley and he inherited the best back to the basket post the program had ever had. Once they were gone we couldnt even get the ball past half court regularly. Larry was more lucky than good. Otz is very good.

Asking the guy that is one of the biggest TJ Stan’s that almost got ran off for suggesting that TJ was the no-brainer when we hired Prohm? Maybe ask the “we need a proper search!” and the “must have HC experience!” people.
Was that your villain origin moment? The beginning of the rot?

IS Joefrog still a poster on CF or did he have to change his name after this thread? Serious question. I was a skeptic at first, still supported the hire but he was all in on this being the worst hire in the history of Iowa State. I mean I was hoping for a Dana Altman type hire but knew we would get TJ. I didn't see this level of Success for TJ but it just shows what passion for a school and hiring the right people can do for a program.

I agree. I will say this about Johnny though. He took over a crap program when you could not just go get a bunch of transfers and was playing in the big 8 which was a very even conference top to bottom. Every home court was brutal to play. He got Hilton Magic started also. So yeah TJ will end up way better than Johnny. However, Johnny basically started Iowa State basketball and got it to a respectable level.
