Some gems
well, we were slow footed or on ball defenders were getting beat until we changed our defense. TJ even admitted it and after the change, our defense shut them down.

Rich Hollenberg isn’t bad. John Walters had him on CyCast recently for a 40 min discussion.

I was surprised to hear Hurley blatantly insinuated he expected better foul calls supporting the home team.
And when he mentioned - paraphrasing- the team played for “me”. Just the comment kinda surprised me in this age of coaching.

I watched his post game press-conf. Wow kind of a jerk. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Railing on his own fans because he didn't have a big enough home-court advantage and moaning about the refs. Grow up Hurley.

They are both the biggest jerks in college basketball. Anybody remember when we played UConn and Dan trashed Lipsey and said the guy sucks and he couldn’t believe his team allowed him to score 9 in the first half? Who the hell does that?

I just finished watching the Bobby Hurley post game presser. This guy loves to throw his players under the bus. He is absolutely insufferable for a .568 winning percentage coach who has never made it out of the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. He has a very similar vibe to me as Fran McCaffery.

The ref said it was unnecessary contact which i still think is debatable. If Gilbert doesn’t go to the floor after that foul I don’t think people are calling for a flagrant.
And if your mother had wheels she would have been a bike.

It would have been impossible for Gilbert to not go to the floor after the foul. That's why it was flagrant. He was undercut from behind. How would that be considered necessary? It's a dangerous play.

Some plays need to be a flagrant regardless of if they were intentional or not. Intentionality / malevolence is not part of the rule.

I don’t think the refs were criming the game for betting purposes. I think they were just bad and doing the typical ‘home team gets home calls’ BS.

I do wish the NCAA would make bench decorum a point of emphasis, and end this whiny coach ********. They shouldn’t have to deal with coaches like the Hurley brothers. And their antics do affect games.
If you start from the viewpoint that “all refs are terrible” it makes watching the games a lot easier.

This is exactly what happened. Gilbert going for a reverse right there was almost certainly not expected by a defender and - frankly - didn’t make sense unless you’re just trying to draw a foul (which is, of course, fine).

The best shot he was going to get would have been on the left with his left.

The ref said it was unnecessary contact which i still think is debatable. If Gilbert doesn’t go to the floor after that foul I don’t think people are calling for a flagrant.

It definitely wasn’t a “clear path” violation as implied above.
True-ish, but he definitely intentionally tried to affect the shot with a light body check while Gilbert was in the air making zero attempt to go for the ball. The defender could have easily avoided all contact. A body check well below center of mass resulted in Gilbert's fall, the fact that there was zero attempt to make a play on the ball made the call.

This is a reasonable take. People saying this was dirty or that he “intentionally undercut” Gilbert are taking it way too far, in my opinion.

If you’re the defender there you are not expecting Gilbert to come under the hoop to the right.

..... addition to that credit they deserve, I believe there are some very objectively real "issues" that they have to correct if they are to make a run at a regular season title. As a fan, I am nervous if these issues don't get fixed, we're going to struggle to win @ AZ, KU, and Houston.
I'll be satisfied wining one of those 3, thrilled if we get 2, ecstatic if we somehow pull off the hat trick.

Just came here to say I'd much rather have a coach like TJ than a coach like Hurley. Hurley hails from the Mccaffery School of coaching: scream at everyone, blame everyone else, and draw all the attention to yourself.

TJ's demeanor is so rare and refreshing. I don't think I've ever seen him yell at an official or get in their face. He'll just calmly wait until the opportunity comes and bend their ear along the sideline.

The yelling and screaming coaches can be successful in getting what they want from the officials, but I'd much prefer someone like TJ representing ISU.

Think back to the last 5 minutes.

One team made plays and played with a ton of poise.

The other team wilted and went cold on offense.

Guys like Hurley, Fran etc want to hoot and holler and act like they’ve got a big **** because they think it makes them some sort of alpha, but that does rub off on your team. It’s a sign of mental immaturity.

We’ve seen over the years with Fran’s teams not playing up to their potential, and Bobby’s ASU teams have yet to rise above mediocre.

In non-conference, ISU's turnover rate was consistently fantastic, even against the better teams. In conference, it has regressed to just okay/average and as noted by @rosshm16, it feels like a lot of the turnovers have been unforced.

It seems to me like part of that is increased workload and pressure on the guards, especially since MM has been out. For instance, Jones has played 36, 36, 34, and 40 minutes in the last four games, and has 11 turnovers in those games to match his 11 in the entire season before that.
I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Teams can pack the lane more against us with MM out, and that invariably leads to more turnovers when our guards are driving.

I think we'll have to live with this for awhile without Milan. We just have to keep the TO's from getting up to like 15 or more. Around 10 is workable, provided we're forcing that amount and more on the other end.

Good Lord, man, what is your obsession with the flagrant call?
