Why doesn't every work office say the pledge of allegiance at the start of the day? Why doesn't isn't the national anthem played before middle school sporting events, Iowa State intramurals, or farmers markets?
I can see it now. Zoom meetings with 3,000 people in them, all listening to the Pledge at 8:00AM sharp each morning. Everyone faces east, unless a flag is present in your office (one is expected to be).

Then again at noon, and again at 4. It's like daily Muslim prayers for patriots. Maybe even a daily morning email with the Pledge in it.

Would you be upset if the national anthem was no longer played at sporting events? I've heard a lot of people say they wish performers would just get it overwith to get to the games. What's your thoughts?
It used to be in the NFL that players would be in the locker rooms during the national anthem.

It seems to me that this would get rid of the scrutinizing of players and coaches on the field and the inevitable viral criticism -- usually ridiculous -- that certain players aren't acting accordingly (hand on heart, tears streaming down face, etc.) or otherwise fitting into someone's idea of "true patriotism".

But the DOD pays the NFL a lot of money to promote the military. So I don't think getting rid of the anthem before the game is realistic at this point, at least not in the NFL.

I could do without it at this point.

When they play it at JTS, most people are ignoring flag etiquette, talking, going up steps or whatever. Sometimes people give me a weird look cause I sing it but that is what I did as a student and the students still sing it.

At high school games, they are kind of extreme. The AD has drafted people out of the crowd to sing it when there is no pep band and the terrible recording they have doesn’t work.

Local HS had a kid play it on a saxophone the last game. Kid stumbled once but did a good job otherwise. I commend anyone who performs it. I do recommend always having the lyrics if you sing it. Audi sang it at a game I was at once and it was a new rendition of it.

Also, not a huge fan of our national anthem in general. Its should have been America the Beautiful.

It might be the worst national anthem on the planet.

It's in this awkward as **** 3/4. It has approximately 17 fermatas. Just stop.

"America the Beautiful" is the obvious choice.

If you need to keep the jingoism, then do "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

You can make that song a march but you can arrange it in a stately manner, too.

I get it when its like the Olympics medal ceremony.
I question why we play it when the players, coaches are still in the locker room at Hilton.
Even this last Saturday, the Gameday people were disassembling the ESPN desk and rolling it across the court while it was being played.
The announcers stopped for the anthem I noticed though. But yeah the assembly team worked right through it.

Doesn't Vegas have a betting line on how long it takes to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl?
It was 2 minutes and 1 second. According to the radio broadcast I listened to. They discussed all kinds of prop and parley bets.

Got a few words out of order in HS?

Pretty much since the floyd riots I believe.

Unless there were Tim Floyd riots it was way before 2020. They were never out there for them for Rhoads era football and I can’t remember them ever being out there for Fred’s teams (or Prohm’s). Maybe I’m wrong.

It's really not great if you remove emotional attachment. It's not "happy birthday to you" horrible level, but it's not great.

I think most of them are bad. Oh Canada isn't great either. When I first heard there was such a thing as "Black National Anthem/Lift Every Voice" I thought "OK now THIS has to be totally awesome right?" but nope, it's not great either.

The only time I think I've actually really grooved out to the US or any other national anthem is the Marvin Gaye rendition...but it's so long, and there's only one Marvin Gay, so it's not at all practical.

I thought I remembered a big kerfuffle about it, but same as you I'm not really sure when.

Personally I like the way it is done now the Magic song at 8 minutes anthem at 4 I believe then team intro slightly after.

Based on the lyrics or the melody? I’d submit Englands as being worse. It’s all about the King/Queen and how the people want the royalty to always be above them, essentially

What don't you like about O Canada? I've always liked it when I hear it at the Olympics
