I’ve had some wild conversations with friends lately like… why we even care about college football anymore. The deck is so stacked against us. Like, let’s say someday we become G5 or worse in football like the SEC/B10 want us to be. Could we just go all-f***ing in with basketball NIL and be a mainstay elite program.

And yes I realize this is dumb :(

So the program won eleven games this year, finished top fifteen, going to have another five(?) guys drafted and you and your friends are having conversations about how the football program just can't compete?

There have been years to have that conversation in the past, but now?

I certainly don’t think there is validity to Goodman here, but let’s not completely dismiss the idea that Iowa State does indeed have a low payroll and TJ wants to win and be able to retain all of the talent in the program right now. Just assuming he won’t leave is different than making sure he has all the resources possible so he doesn’t. As of now Indiana will have nearly double the NIL budget of Iowa State for basketball.
Let me know if you need an assistant donor acquisition manager. ;)

Disagree he makes more than enough money at ISU. He loves this place and Indiana is not a step up at this point.
THIS THIS and THIS!!!! TJ is not going to leave ISU barring anything completely unforeseen happening to sour his relationship with Iowa State. Talking heads can speculate all they want, but he’s not going anywhere!!

It would be typical Iowa State to punt on football right when we are good.

This.

I fear a lot of Iowa State fans overestimate “loyalty”. We have forever. Myself included. TJ is loyal. He loves Iowa State. He truly believes he can win a title in Ames. And goddamn, that’s awesome. But we can’t be naïve to think there isn’t a world where he feels he can’t get and keep the types of players he believes it will take to get there.

Likewise, the big question is: would Sydney Sweeney want to be my mistress?

Also, how does he know TJs buyout? I have yet to hear any of the details from either coaches new extensions.

And finally, how would my wife feel about the aforementioned relationship?
Why would TJ's new contract have a lower buyout? That makes no sense whatsoever. The guy's really grasping here.

We have guys getting double the offer we can offer for next year already. It’s not about super teams, it’s about keeping this team together as it stands for now and beyond.

I understand that and my feeling on that is let them leave then.

They can go be the next Tyrese Hunter and learn the hard way they are individually good because of the team they are on and that they aren't as good individually without that team.

eh, but we're still basically in the infancy of the NIL world. We've been told that many of our football players are essentially giving us loyalty discounts on what they could make in the broader market. Its valid to ask if that is sustainable over the long run.

And on the basketball side, I'd be curious as to how much of this team's success is built on getting some favorable deals. I'm guessing we currently getting some favorable (compared to market rates) deals from Lipsey (hometown kid) and KG (connection to TJ going back to UNLV). Is that sustainable? Blum can of course correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm guessing to sustain the level of talent we have currently is going to take a good deal more money than today. I think basketball is a little easier than football as nearly every high level prospect has there eyes on the real prize- getting prepared for a professional career and doesn't necessarily have to max out their earnings during their college days the way most football players do, but it'll still be a big factor.

I think there's definite valid concerns about the effect of the NIL-driven athletics world going forward on Iowa State. And yes, there will always be some teams that have money, spend it, and don't perform. But much like when people have tried to argue "stars don't matter" in recruiting at times, over time we tend to see that in general the better athletes schools are able to buy, the more successful years they will have.

Everyone knew Fred was leaving when he took the job. It was the most well known thing about him, that if the NBA came calling he was going.

Cael on the other hand was a bit of a shock, but for a sport like wrestling, not many can or will back up the brinks truck for someone like Penn St did. Especially considering how BB and FB are the only sports that actually make money. Sure Indiana probably can pay more, but I dont know if the difference he can make there is similar to the difference Cael was offered.

I honestly didnt know a lot about Cael's aspirations when he was coaching here, so really not sure how much of a shock it was either. He was REALLY young when here too, things change a bit when you are a bit older, married and have a family.

That being said I have not seen anywhere what CMC and TJ new contract looks like nor how much they are paid etc. which makes me question whether their info on his buyout is correct or going off his old contract.

Not about him. Indiana has 2x the NIL budget. Going to be hard to continue to keep guys at that rate.
At some point it won’t be all about the money. Just look at Kansas. Players want to win too. Can we be competitive enough in NIL? Yes. Strong culture beats highest payroll 99% of the time.
