Watched a lot of BYU-Arizona last night, BYU is peaking at the right time so that's going to be another real tough game coming up so Iowa State will still have some challenges to close the regular season which is a good thing I think. Egor Demin looks like a top 5 NBA prospect to me, what an impressive player he is.

What a terrific job overall. There were some things I absolutely did not agree with in the first half (playing Cade that much), but the experiment was short lived and was absolutely not the reason we lost. That was honestly due more to Houston hitting some extremely difficult shots. Cannot get too upset about that at all, I mean, step back 20+ foot shots are not high percentage and they had to have hit 80% of them down the stretch.

I'll also throw in there that the cylinder call was outrageous. That was such a horrible call and did change the momentum during that part of the game. God awful. They also got a few really ticky tack calls that were not good, however we didn't help ourselves with missing a front end of a 1 and 1 either. Regardless, fantastic job by that group.

Tamin played incredible. Milan was absolutely dominant in the second half. Heise played terrific. Chatfield stepped in perfectly for Jackson who had a frustrating day because of fouls. Jefferson did struggle but he did a lot of things that were needed to be where that game ended up being. Just an honestly solid basketball game to watch overall and I'm very proud of our guys.
Good points, plus what I'm most encouraged by is the team's ball movement as reflected by 13 assists on 18 shots, and Houston's 6 assists. Pretty much represents what we saw: Houston beat us with one-on-one shots, some of them with a high degree of difficulty. I think we'll play them again in KC and feel good about our chances with a healthy starting five.

I rewatched the game and in addition to the questionable "in the cylinder" call, they missed what I thought were 2 obvious traveling calls. The last Houston basket of the 1st half, the shooter took at least 3 if not 4 steps before shooting. And when Cryer lost control going toward the basket early 2nd half, he took 3 steps before passing the ball.
Not counting Cryer's step back 3's that on several occasions, he took an extra step before the release. That is a tough call because it only happened on some of his shots and since the Euro step (which is traveling) in not called anymore, refs are probably not going to call it on the step back either. Those, along with the moving screens and forearm shiver while dribbling (the Caitlyn Clark special) are my frustrations with reffing these days.

From Houston message board... (AKA law firm)
Haha I did that actually.

Personally I'm just thrilled with how Momcilovic played in the 2nd half. Looks like he's starting to gain confidence attacking the basket and those whirling scoop shots are becoming a real weapon for him.

Lipsey was clutch again just like at Arizona. Plays his best in two tough environments when we need it the most?

Speaks well for March.

Lipsey sometimes gets taken in on ball defense and also maybe it was to avoid Tamin getting in foul trouble.
Yeah, Heise was the right guy with his length and strength. Cryer hit some incredible shots. Lipsey isn't tall and can get caught gambling. One play that stood out to me was Lipsey bodying up Uzan for 25 seconds on the last possession of the 1st half. Then he gambles for a steal with 5 seconds left and lets Uzan get to the hoop when he didn't get the swipe from behind. Lipsey and our bigs poorly defending good PGs/pick and pop forwards in the middle of the court will likely be why we lose in the tourney.

That said, there are few guys I'd want on the court more than Lipsey in the 2nd half of a big game.

The cylinder call was egregious, but the next Cryer and-1 on Heise was just as bad imo. We didn't get a great look at it, but it didn't look like anyone even touched him. 6 huge points and a potential 6 or 7 point swing at the most crucial point of the game when we had all the momentum was just a really disappointing way to end the game.

Kelvin Sampson’s post-game interview confirmed what we saw, too - that our trapping 1/3rds defense forced Houston out of being able to to use Roberts and the wings not named Cryer from driving (which they normally do with regularity and success against other teams) and forced their hand into playing iso ball in the middle of the floor to avoid double teams (he was very complimentary of us for that, amongst other things)

It’s a hell of a feather in our program’s cap to both have the dudes and the brainpower to force a Sampson-coached team to take such a drastic measure. With two of our highest minute guys out, mind you.

Our staff picked what would be a very potent poison against any other team and Cryer played out of his mind. That’s a winning strategy 90% of the time.

Yep, there are only so many things that you can take away from another team. This was undoubtedly the correct call as it gave us a chance to win the game down the stretch. If Cryer had even gone just a little cold, we would have won.

Way up there
Did anyone else find it interesting that Heise was the primary defender on the smaller Cryer and Lipsey was primarily guarding the bigger Uzan?

Physically it seems like you'd want it the other way around, Nate usually guards bigger players in the small ball lineup. Thought it was odd we matched up how we did, especially bc it's not like either defender was locking their guy down.

Yeah in hindsight I bet they would have put Lipsey on Cryer earlier.

Traveling and listened to the Houston game on radio. I thought the cylinder call frustration/hyperbole by John & Eric might have just been homerism.

Holy Cow!!! That was a horrible reversal. Heise's head was his only body part remotely in-the- cylinder. The Houston player could have ripped the ball low and made a move. But he brought the ball up to Heise's head level and ripped.

90% of the flagrant foul calls I've seen this year for head contact were less flagrant!!

Let's get OSU!! GO defense.
